Robin House, designed by Wolveridge Architects, redefines coastal residential design by bridging the gap between mass-market offerings and high-end architectural solutions. The home offers a thoughtful alternative that combines aesthetics with functionality.

Located in Mount Martha, Victoria, Robin House occupies the rear portion of an existing, sub-divided lot that was originally part of a single residence split into four. Amid growing challenges in housing supply and accessibility, the project serves as an experiment in scalable design – adaptable while maintaining a robust approach. In response to the coastal surroundings, creating a calm atmosphere was important in every aspect, from internal spatial connections to blending indoor and outdoor realms.

Wolveridge Architects draws inspiration from a market niche that blends bespoke, boutique design with enduring simplicity. The kitchen was envisioned as a spacious hub for gathering and entertaining, complemented by a connected living and dining area. The design also prioritises creating a sense of separation between active, open spaces and retreat areas, with consideration given to natural light, air circulation and landscape views. To enhance the openness of the living area, a gable ceiling draws the eye upward, adding to the sense of grandeur. Contrastingly, more intimate spaces feature lower ceilings, creating a cosier atmosphere.

Throughout the design process, it was important to establish a distinct character for the residence. The spaces are animated with thoughtful detailing while maintaining a base palette that allows for personalisation. Consideration was given to complement rather than compete with the owners’ belongings and collected treasures, making the home a canvas for daily life and self-expression. Inside, the focus is on creating a welcoming and familiar environment. The inclusion of a central courtyard also encourages a sense of elevation through elements such as curved forms and natural stone.

Through Robin House, Wolveridge Architects gains insight into contemporary lifestyles by actively engaging with the clients. The goal was to create a home that captures unique moments and details often absent in standard proposals, resulting in a residence characterised by its muted, restrained and refined design.
