Czech premium lighting brand Brokis not only creates lights that are audacious and groundbreaking – it has been a major force in reviving the country’s ancient glassmaking traditions.

When Czech entrepreneur and engineer Jan Rabell established the Brokis lighting brand in 2006, he did so with an altruistic intention – to revive and elevate the centuries-old Bohemian glassmaking industry, which was in decline for myriad reasons, including the dwindling demand for traditional glass products. Nine years earlier, he had acquired an ailing glassworks 140 kilometres outside of Prague in the hope of restoring the factory to its former glory and preserving traditional techniques that were in danger of being lost forever.

Janštejn Glassworks is now the largest producer of speciality lighting glass in the Czech Republic and is the epicentre of the Brokis success story.

Fast forward to 2024 and Janštejn Glassworks is now the largest producer of speciality lighting glass in the Czech Republic and is the epicentre of the Brokis success story: one of Europe’s most innovative lighting brands, with both a burgeoning international reputation and a product portfolio that seamlessly integrates cutting-edge technology and exquisite artistry. Brokis lights are also created in collaboration with a roster of European and global design names.

Brokis – which is available exclusively in Australia through Koda – might have centuries of tradition in its corner, but its range is marked by a sense of experimentation and material innovation. Brokis’s lights meld handblown glass with materials such as manually pressed metal and concrete to create bold lighting compositions that bring a sense of audacity to any space.

Take Trottola, a range of pendant and table lights with a shape inspired by a spinning top. Designed by Milan-based Federico Peri, Trottola features a base of anodised aluminium (in either black or silver) and an opaline glass shade that casts a diffused light. The table options feature an elegant dimmer that adjusts both brightness and temperature.

Frequent Brokis collaborator Lucie Koldova is the designer behind the striking – and highly customisable – Ivy range, with an elegant organic shape inspired by the trailing nature of the timeless climbing plant. Here, a graceful metal ‘branch’ is dotted with handblown glass shades available in light rose, opal and smoke finishes and in three sizes.

Brokis launched its latest range, Starcloud, in Milan in April, a bespoke collection of pendants featuring an abstract star form, also from the imagination of Koldova. The delicate, handblown glass shades – suspended on slender cables of differing lengths – are available in subtle shades of opaline, pearl pink opaline and pearl grey opaline. The range features six set sizes, but these can be mixed and matched to create an infinite array of ‘starscapes’.
