All signs point to USB-C as the future of universal device charging – and ZETR introduces flush USB-C outlets that are the sleekest way to stay connected.

In the world of product design, it’s usually the eye-catching innovations that make a mark. But in 2018, ZETR reversed the trend by creating a product purposely designed to be invisible. The 13 / FLUSH range heralded a new era of integrated electrical fixtures that blend seamlessly with surrounding materials, eliminating the eyesore of traditional chunky white faceplates. And now the range has a new offering to make daily life even more seamless: integrated USB-C ports.

USB-C connections are considered to be the new international standard across personal tech. Apple adopted USB-C as its new iPhone charging port in 2023, joining the ranks of Android brands already using USB-C across their smartphone ranges. Why the change? In 2022, the European Union declared that by the end of 2024, all mobile phones, tablets and cameras sold in the EU will have to be equipped with a uniform USB-C charging port.

By 2026, the ruling will extend to laptops, and include headphones, game consoles, rechargeable computer accessories, e-readers and portable speakers. Basically, every small-to-medium portable electronic device with a power delivery up to 100W will need to be equipped with the same USB-C port.

The ruling is part of a broader strategy to reduce e-waste (chargers currently account for 11,000 tonnes of e-waste per year in the EU alone) and give more agency to consumers, who will no longer be ‘locked in’ to buying one brand for compatibility across devices and who will likely save money on purchasing multiple chargers. Despite no other countries adopting the legislation, the ripple effects have been seen worldwide, reflecting a global approach to a more sustainable model.

For consumers worldwide, this universal compatibility means only ever needing to carry one cord. And for designers, this presents an opportunity to connect all spaces – from home to work to public buildings – with the same streamlined power solution. The ZETR USB-C solutions are compatible with 13 / FLUSH mounting assemblies and feature options of dual 20W USB-C – paired with 240V outlets – or high-output 65W dual USB-C ports.

The USB-C power output recharges a smartphone in about 1.3 hours (versus 3.5 hours via a 5W outlet) and can charge a 13-inch laptop in just 2.5 hours. There’s also a high-powered 65W option, which charges a 14-inch laptop in a mere 1.5 hours. With no on/off switch required, the matte-finish faceplates have minimal impact on architectural finishes and are available in black and white. There is also the option to add CARBON metal finish faceplates to suit a range of wall materials.

Just like their 13 / FLUSH predecessors, the new streamlined ZETR USB-C outlets are ready to connect people and places – as inconspicuously as possible.
