Mondoluce’s Top Seven Alfresco Lights
A new wave of alfresco lighting is elevating external spaces to new heights of elegance, while standing up to the unique conditions of the great outdoors. Mondoluce selects seven stand-out pieces.
In 1995, Australian lighting retailer Mondoluce was founded to bring the world’s best lighting – with a focus on Italian designs – to customers Down Under. From its Sydney and Melbourne showrooms and via its online platform, Mondoluce showcases a tightly curated range of lighting chosen for its original design, forward-thinking technology and commitment to quality.
Recently, the retailer has noticed European lighting designers moving towards creating considered outdoor lighting – these pieces are a far cry from classic outdoor-lighting styles that, while functional, weren’t particularly inspiring and put limits on clients hoping to find a throughline from their interiors to their exteriors. This new wave of outdoor lights is designed to endure the harsh conditions of the Australian great outdoors while elevating the look and ambience of alfresco spaces. Ever at the forefront of lighting trends, Mondoluce has brought a huge array of new lighting solutions to our shores from Italy and beyond, with seven stand-out collections that combine both functionality and beauty.
Since 2013, Italian brand Masiero’s Drylight line has been pushing the boundaries of exterior lighting. Its Drylight Outdoor Chandelier, available exclusively from Mondoluce, brings the monumental drama of Venetian chandeliers outdoors, with its smaller-scale Drylight Wall Light offering a more subtle illumination. Both are the result of years of research, and are protected against dust, water, corrosion, UV and extreme temperatures. Masiero’s Cordea collection, meanwhile, is inspired by vintage industrial lamps. The Cordea Exterior Pendant and Wall Light, which are both available in a number of neutral colours, bring warmth and old-world charm to alfresco spaces.
High-end Italian lighting company Axolight has collaborated with renowned designer Mario Alessiani on the Float range, inspired by children’s swimming floats. These two versatile pieces – the Float Table Lamp and the Float Floor Lamp – are suitable for both indoors and outdoors. The ‘floating’ round lamp head of each can be attached to a long, thin pedestal, or used as a pendant or wall light. An in-built lithium-ion battery charged via USB powers the lamps, making them perfect for outdoor spaces without power points. Also from Axolight is an outdoor reinterpretation of its popular interior wall light, Lik. This modern, curved piece is well-suited to high-humidity areas, and can be mounted everywhere from facades to decks and gardens.
For a playful alternative to high-concept lightning, there’s the Dino Floor Lamp by Slide. This distinctive oversized egg-shaped light, moulded from polyethylene, softly illuminates and goes well beyond the expected when it comes to external lighting.
Designed specifically for commercial projects are the Cody Outdoor Wall Light and the Cody Double Outdoor Wall Light from Studio Italia. These heavy-duty, minimalist lights – one offering an uplight or downlight, the other offering both – are anti-corrosive and designed to withstand harsh weather conditions. Studio Italia is also behind the simple design of the Moby Outdoor Ceiling Light and Moby Up + Down Outdoor Wall Light. Designed in France, these anti-corrosive aluminium pieces illuminate outdoor spaces with a 35- or 55-degree beam angle. Their subtle design allows the rest of the space to do the talking.
As outdoor-illumination options grow to encompass design-focused clients’ tastes, Mondoluce is at the forefront of finding and selling the world’s best external lighting to discerning Australian customers.
