St Kevin’s College’s Glendalough facility uses Dekton by Cosentino for a visually striking and durable facade, exemplifying how modern materials can redefine architectural possibilities.

In the heart of Melbourne’s Toorak neighbourhood, St Kevin’s College’s new learning facility stands as a testament to the intersection of modern education and architectural innovation. Named Glendalough, this junior campus extension, completed in April 2024, offers a calm, inviting learning environment that seamlessly integrates with the urban fabric while making a bold architectural statement. A thoughtful collaboration between Chandler Architecture and Cosentino ensures that the building’s facade marries aesthetic beauty with sustainable functionality.

For the facade, the architect aimed to create a visual narrative that resonates with the historic surroundings while signalling the future of educational spaces – and Dekton was the perfect option to achieve both. An ultra-compact surface that is created through an advanced sinterisation process, Dekton replicates the timeless appeal of natural stone while offering the benefits of cutting-edge technology.

Its smooth consistent surface mirrors the surrounding architecture at St Kevin’s, yet its superior performance and technical attributes distinguish it from traditional materials. It resists UV rays, ensuring that colour remains stable even with prolonged sunlight exposure, and its resistance to scratches, stains and abrasions makes it exceptionally low-maintenance.

The material’s ability to absorb acoustic and thermal energy ensures that the building remains a haven of quiet and comfort, even as the city pulses outside.

Dekton’s contribution to the building’s character extends beyond its visual impact to its functional benefits. Covering 200 square metres of the facade, Dekton was chosen for its ability to withstand Melbourne’s varied climate while maintaining its integrity over time. The material’s medium flexural strength exceeds ceramic standards, offering enhanced safety against strong winds and seismic activity.

It also features linear thermal expansion values similar to natural stone or concrete, eliminating the need for special fixing systems. Its porosity is five times lower than top-grade ceramics, making it highly resistant to humidity, rain and frost, and it is fire-proof. Additionally, the material’s ability to absorb acoustic and thermal energy ensures that the building remains a haven of quiet and comfort, even as the city pulses outside.

From the initial concept to the final installation, the Cosentino team worked closely with Chandler Architecture, offering technical expertise and personalised support.

Beyond its physical attributes, Dekton also boasts impressive sustainable credentials. As a cradle-to-grave carbon-neutral product, it aligns with the school’s commitment to environmental stewardship. The production process of Dekton minimises waste and energy use, reflecting a forward-thinking approach to architecture. Its versatility allows it to adapt to various facade types, including ventilated facades, curtain walls and bonded facades, making it an ideal choice for this project while contributing to the overall aesthetic coherence of the campus.

Cosentino’s involvement in the project was integral to its success. From the initial concept to the final installation, the team worked closely with Chandler Architecture, offering technical expertise and personalised support. The result is a building that not only meets but exceeds the expectations set out in the design brief. As residents, students and visitors approach Glendalough, they are met with a facade that tells a story – one of thoughtful design, innovative material use and a deep respect for the environment.
