A playful rejuvenation of a heritage-listed home, Lyrebird House by NY Design is a modern family home that doesn’t neglect its original Art Deco charm.

Built in 1940 and nestled on a leafy street in Melbourne’s Caulfield North, Lyrebird House is a characterful house sensitively restored by NY Design. Led by Nina Hendler, the approach focused on retaining an air of historical intrigue while introducing whimsy, colour and modern functionality. During the reinvigoration, the original facade as well as the front three rooms were preserved and restored. New additions were deeply considered; the rear space was deftly renovated and a first-floor addition with four bedrooms and bathroom facilities breathes new life into the home.

Led by Nina Hendler, the approach focused on retaining an air of historical intrigue while introducing whimsy, colour and modern functionality.

Materials and decor are bold and playful, defined by pattern and colour. In some ways, each room has a different theme and atmosphere according to function. The library/lounge is ornate, with sheer curtains, plush sofas and a baby grand piano. Meanwhile, the combined kitchen, dining and living area features a luxe and understated kitchen, with oak timber joinery, metal accents and a neutral marble bench and splashback, which are complemented by a statement chartreuse green sofa, a textured rug, soft modular coffee tables and ceramics thoughtfully scattered across shelving. In the dining area, pink hues dominate; pastel pink dining chairs and red, pink and orange tartan cushions complement an array of vibrant artworks.

Contrasting colours bring the bathrooms to life; the spaces balance mahogany red hues, greens, blues, neutrals and a speckled pink. The pink theme also extends outside, with a bright pink outdoor table and seating arrangement adding a pop of colour atop the stone pavement. Wallpaper also features heavily throughout the home as an ode to its past, such as the floral wallpaper in the main bedroom. The hallways are more traditional and pared back, with white walls, original ceiling detailing and dark timber floorboards adding neutrality to the otherwise animated home.

Working with the inhabitants in mind, NY Design thoughtfully restored Lyrebird House to reawaken its former stature. The result is a multifaceted, kaleidoscopic venture that is fun, exuberant and centred on the idea of home.
