Housed within an historic Victorian terrace in Carlton, Eva’s first flagship showroom thoughtfully reimagines the retail experience.

Walking along Faraday Street in Melbourne’s inner north, one would never expect the white heritage facade of Eva Carlton House to conceal a showroom. Designed by In Addition alongside the Eva team, this bricks-and-mortar store retains the heritage-protected terrace while evoking a sense of home for visitors as they explore the products within. As a furniture and homewares brand, Eva values honest, design-conscious and quality furniture. The brief called for a retail environment that reflects these values, creating a space that feels both warm and inviting.

The material palette is designed to highlight Eva’s range of products while adding an extra layer of visual intrigue to the space.

Founded by husband-and-wife team Amanda Niu and Ken Lau, the showroom marks a big step for the brand, which has sold its products exclusively online since 2017. The space features living and bedroom areas showcasing Eva’s bedding and furniture collections, including the top-selling Eva Slideaway sofa bed, along with Australian-made ceramic pieces from pépite and a curated selection of Australian art from Artbank. Countless details honour the original period home; a restored arched window invites passers-by to glimpse inside, while an original fireplace uncovered during the renovation has been beautifully restored.

The material palette is designed to highlight Eva’s range of products while adding an extra layer of visual intrigue to the space. Stone plinths and custom timber joinery display various items and provide informal seating areas for customers. The stone and timber are complemented by brass lettering from Studio Tops at the entry of the glass-panelled door, featuring custom glasswork by Fools Glass, which offers a modern interpretation of the traditional highlight window.

In Addition’s thoughtful design enables customers to physically experience the brand’s offerings in an authentic, comfortable environment.

Key to the design is the experience of moving through the space. Daily rituals are integrated seamlessly; there’s a place for your umbrella and keys upon entry, along with hooks for hanging coats. As one moves through the showroom, considered details facilitate informal conversations, with many gathering spots available. A playful colour palette invites visitors to explore the various rooms and engage with the furniture, drawing the eye to moments of visual drama. The atmosphere feels laid-back, authentic, calm – not too serious – allowing people to envision Eva’s furniture, linen and homewares, which sit harmoniously within the space, in their own homes.

In Addition’s thoughtful design enables customers to physically experience the brand’s offerings in an authentic, comfortable environment. In this sense, Eva Carlton House represents an innovative concept that perfectly captures the essence of the Eva brand, providing a unique shopping experience that is enjoyable, informal and familiar – just like home.
