Four decades after it was purchased, a family’s King Living sofa has been re-covered for the second time, reflecting the brand’s ethos: classic furniture with longevity at its core.

There’s no better testament to the durability and timelessness of a piece of furniture than it still being in daily use after four decades. Such was the case when a King Living customer brought a sofa they’d purchased in 1982 to the company’s headquarters wanting it to refurbished – for a second time. So treasured was the piece – which had been a central feature of the family’s living room for 40-plus years – that the customer opted to go down the rejuvenation path rather than buying a new sofa.

“Many of our customers choose to re-cover their sofas for sentimental reasons. It preserves a piece that has been with them through life’s significant moments.”

“Many of our customers choose to re-cover their sofas for sentimental reasons,” says King Living founder David King. “It preserves a piece that has been with them through life’s significant moments. It’s also an eco-friendly decision that keeps furniture out of landfills. It’s a cost-effective alternative to buying a new sofa and offers a fresh update with new fabric or leather options, rejuvenating the sofa’s appearance while maintaining its original comfort and structure.”

The piece, a 1980 Award sofa, had already been re-covered in 1994. So, for the second time, the company’s team of skilled craftspeople set about carefully restoring it. The process began with Phil, a King Living foam specialist, who added extra foam to the structure to improve comfort levels. Next, master cutter Denang prepared the new light-toned fabric to ensure a precise fit before seamstress Vera reinforced the covers with double stitching, boosting durability. Finally, re-covering specialist Silvio oversaw the fitting of the new covers.

“With its timeless design, the sofa looked perfectly at home in the showroom, a testament to our commitment to creating furniture that remains visually relevant year after year.”

In another full-circle moment, the renewed sofa was photographed in King Living’s showroom in Sydney’s Annandale, where the customer bought the original piece. “With its timeless design, the sofa looked perfectly at home in the showroom, a testament to our commitment to creating furniture that remains visually relevant year after year,” says King. “We have always favoured a clean, timeless aesthetic and the process with this 1980 Award sofa showcases how well-designed furniture can truly last for generations.”

It’s also an example of how King Living’s King-Care service operates, providing customers with re-covering and refurbishment options to extend the life of their furniture, and evidence of the brand’s commitment to sustainable solutions. “We are extremely proud to offer comprehensive aftercare services through our King-Care team. Sustainability is at the core of everything we do, and it’s one of the many ways we ensure our furniture lasts a lifetime.”
