Swedish Bedmaker Hästens Opens its First Australian Showroom
Hästens beds offer the pinnacle in sleep solutions, with wellbeing front of mind. Now the Swedish company has opened its first standalone Australian showroom, in Sydney’s Paddington.
There are beds. And then there are Hästens beds. Since 1852, the Swedish company has been handcrafting beds that elevate the art of sleeping into a different stratosphere of comfort and luxury, and recognise that a great night’s sleep is a huge booster to mental and physical wellbeing. Now the brand has its first standalone Australian home, a three-level showroom in Sydney’s Paddington, created in partnership with Scandinavian furniture specialist Great Dane, and the work of local architect Michael Robilliard.
Robilliard worked with Great Dane founder Anton Assaad and creative director Megan Marshall and the Hästens global showroom design team to create the space, which occupies a prime position on Oxford Street. “We’re excited to grow our world-class sleep solutions in the Australian market with our flagship showroom opening in the heart of Sydney,” says Johan Lindbäck, the company’s chief sales officer. “The collaboration between Hästens and Great Dane brings together two brands committed to quality, design and craftsmanship, offering an unrivalled sleep experience for discerning customers.”
The light-filled flagship has a distinctly Scandinavian aesthetic, with a considered curation of furniture and lighting from Great Dane forming the backdrop to the collection. “It stands as a tribute to craftsmanship, offering a space where tradition meets innovation,” says Lindbäck. “Every detail has been thoughtfully curated, from the leather-wrapped banister to the custom furniture, reflecting the timeless traditions of artisanal design. With a focus on handcrafted excellence and natural materials, the showroom also highlights the work of Scandinavian makers who share this ethos.”
The showroom hosts the full range of Hästens offerings, with price points from $28,000 to $1.2 million for the jewel in the company’s crown, the Grand Vividus. Other beds include the 2000T, first launched in 1978 and a favourite of Hästens CEO Jan Ryde (it was designed by his father, Jack), and the ultra-luxe drémər, which features a velvet headboard and refined piping.
The new space marks a continuance of the highly successful partnership with Great Dane Furniture: the first Hästens presence in Australia operates as a store-within-a-store at Great Dane’s Fitzroy showroom in Melbourne, which exceeded sales projections by 30 per cent in its first year. “We are honoured to partner with Hästens to bring its world-class beds to Australia,” says Assaad. “With the increasing focus on health and wellness, we are confident that Hästens’ expertise in sleep will resonate with Australians looking to prioritise their wellbeing.”
Six generations of craftsmen have creating beds and mattresses in the company’s atelier in Köping, Sweden, using all natural materials including horsetail hair, cotton, wool and flax, selected for their ability to regulate temperature and ensure maximum breathability. A five-stage production process means each Hästens bed is not only meticulously manufactured but also incredibly durable – a feature backed by a 25-year warranty. Wellbeing is a core tenet: the company has long been driven to create beds that enhance its customers’ sleep, recognising that sleep has myriad health benefits.
At the Paddington showroom, customers are encouraged to book an appointment for a bed test with one of Hästens’ sleep experts, who will tailor recommendations to their individual sleep needs. “From selecting the ideal firmness to customising the size and design, every aspect of the bed can be personalised to create the perfect sleep environment,” says Lindbäck.
