With their latest project, Copperstone, Emma and Tom Lane of The Range Estates layer the charm of a Spanish hacienda with the rustic appeal of an outback homestead to create a country escape like no other.

With their background in agri-tourism, Emma and Tom Lane of The Range Estates (TRE) have developed a reputation for creating incomparable experiences. As with all the properties in TRE’s portfolio, the pair’s latest project, Copperstone, is more than luxe accommodation: it’s an exhalation, an opportunity to recalibrate and experience the pure joy of slow living.

Back in their favourite stomping ground of Byron Shire, the Lanes brought Copperstone back to life on 19 hectares of incomparable countryside in Bangalow. A former biodynamic stone-fruit farm, this Aussie arcadia features 10 flat hectares of perfect horse-riding country, inspiring the pair to create the ultimate equine retreat.

Inspired by their travels – particularly to sultry Mediterranean destinations – the Lanes aimed to capture European charm within the context of an Australian landscape, with architect Sam Ray of Story Design Collective borrowing equally from old-world Spanish architecture and outback homesteads.

The warm and welcoming palette is continued with flattering tones of rose pink, ecru and chocolate brown – it’s golden hour here all day long.

The beauty of the site informed every element, with the new homestead designed to complement and celebrate the views of embracing hills and rolling pastures, and to capture the exquisite sunsets. Sparing use of archways evokes a Spanish hacienda, while the sunset-toned exterior cement render is both a nod to Mediterranean style and a tip of the Akubra to Australia’s red earth. This warm and welcoming palette is continued with flattering tones of rose pink, ecru and chocolate brown – it’s golden hour here all day long.

The palette is a delicate marriage of rustic appeal and luxury elegance, with textures ranging from the rough-sawn hardwood and recycled bricks in the exterior spaces to subtly luminous Mineral Fox Venetian plaster on the interior walls, oxidised copper benchtops and inspired lashings of pink travertine.

Tapping into a collective craving for tranquillity, the property works with the site’s natural beauty to subtly carve out multiple moments of harmony.

One of TRE’s core tenets is conservation and reverence for nature, expressed at Copperstone through a native rainforest planting program along Byron Creek, which runs through the property. Materials for the build have been sourced locally, where possible, and with sustainable practices in mind. For example, the stables recycle Australian hardwoods from the original unsalvageable home, while the main homestead uses regeneratively produced stringybark from an Indigenous group in Cape Tribulation.

Fundamental to Copperstone is the idea of peace as the ultimate luxury. Tapping into a collective craving for tranquillity, the property works with the site’s natural beauty to subtly carve out multiple moments of harmony, where one can sit and let one’s body and mind slow to match the somnolence of the countryside. Guests can take a meditative wander around the Tuscan-style walled garden, roam the walking trails or spot a platypus in Lane’s Lake.

Facilities include a tennis court, wellness retreat, 25-metre mineral pool, pool house, an indoor cinema, entertainers’ dream kitchen complete with wood-fired oven.

For more vigorous entertainments, Copperstone’s equine focus manifests in exquisitely appointed stables, a dressage arena and riding trails. Other facilities include a tennis court, wellness retreat, 25-metre mineral pool, pool house, an indoor cinema, entertainers’ dream kitchen complete with wood-fired oven, and various dining and entertaining spaces, both indoors and out, from the sunken living area with built-in velvet lounge to sun-warmed alfresco settings.

The emphasis at Copperstone is on connection – as you slowly pass through a tunnel of foliage, you enter a world apart where you can leave stresses behind and focus on soulful connections with people and place.
