In Focus: Creative Lighting Solutions
With an enviable project portfolio and a designer range that includes esteemed brands like Vibia and Vistosi, Byron Bay-based Creative Lighting Solutions is one of the region’s most sought-after lighting suppliers.
Creative Lighting Solutions’ project portfolio reads like a roll call of some of the most elevated designer spaces in NSW’s Northern Rivers, from Light Years restaurant in Byron to The Banya spa in Mullumbimby. Add equally impressive residential projects such as Ziggy’s Villas by HGA Studio and Beach Haus by Studio Haus Co and it’s clear that the Byron Bay-based retailer has a peerless reputation in the region – and beyond. “We feel incredibly fortunate to work on a diverse range of projects, both residential and commercial,” says lighting consultant Eleanor Blackstock.
For 18 years, the design community, retailers, developers and homeowners have been drawn to Creative Lighting Solutions’ evolving collection of architectural, decorative and landscape lighting, sourced both locally and globally. Asking Blackstock to name highlights of the range is like asking a parent to name their favourite child.
“It’s definitely a very hard choice,” she says. “Our Spanish brands – Vibia, Santa & Cole, Bover and Milan – offer a great mix of innovation and timeless design, all while prioritising sustainability and ethical production. Then there are the Italians – Vistosi’s Murano glass and Toscot’s Tuscan clay pieces truly stand out.” Creative Lighting Solutions is also the sole Australian distributor of New York’s Niche Modern, where “every detail is thoughtfully considered. Its bold colour palette is unique, beautifully complementing the clean silhouettes of the designs.”
Additionally, the company is an ardent supporter of local makers including Gold Coast-based SØKTAS and Fluxwood, as well as Western Australian architectural outfit Unios. “We are so lucky to have talented artisans in our own backyard who are pushing Australian lighting design forward,” says Blackstock. “They highlight the need for intentional, sustainable pieces rather than the mass-produced ‘fast-fashion’ approach of some larger manufacturers.”
The company is more than a lighting retailer. A wide-ranging – and free – consultancy service is integral to Creative Lighting Solutions’ ongoing success and is equally relevant for a homeowner with minimal knowledge of lighting and a clued-up designer. “If a local client is coming in with no idea of what they need, we can create a tailored lighting plan for them, either based on their plans or by meeting with them onsite for a walk-through,” says Blackstock. “For clients outside the Northern Rivers, we provide consultations via phone, email or visual conferencing.”
This expert advice easily crosses over distance and knowledge boundaries, too. “For clients who have some idea of what they want, we can help them find a way to achieve their desired look, catering to their site-specific requirements and limitations. Alternatively, for clients with a clear vision, we can assist them with product suggestions and sourcing.”
Custom fabrication is another key offering. “This can range from a complete custom build to providing the structure or suspension required to turn someone’s sculpture, antique or heirloom piece into a functional luminaire,” explains Blackstock. “In addition, many of our brands accept customisation requests for their pieces, allowing something to be tailored to suit a project’s distinct requirements.”
