Odyssey Architecture reinvigorates a heritage dwelling in Prahran into a contemporary home grounded in understated charm.

In Melbourne’s inner south, countless Victorian-era homes line the streets. As such, many homes look similar to Prahran House at first glimpse. From the outside, intricate plasterwork, original mouldings and period elements are restored, giving the home a renewed sense of grandeur without neglecting its heritage charm. In contrast, however, the rear facade features a clean, rectilinear brick form softened by subtle curves and detailed with steel-framed windows.

Odyssey Architecture restructured the home’s floor plan to allow for more modern, functional living.

While the heritage facade is retained to honour the suburb’s vernacular and celebrate the home’s Victorian heritage, the interior is entirely reconceived. Like many Victorian homes built around a similar time, there was no existing connection between communal spaces and outdoor areas. Odyssey Architecture restructured the home’s floor plan to allow for more modern, functional living. An open plan living area welcomes a sense of flow and connects seamlessly to the garden. In addition, a new main suite, cleverly concealed behind a secret door, includes a generous walk-in robe and ensuite.

The materiality throughout is muted and understated. Soft, neutral tones are complemented by a refined palette of soothing greys, Carrara marble and warm timbers. Natural light is also a centrepiece of the home’s design; extensive glazing floods the interiors with light, while a charming window seat invites moments of quiet contemplation while bathed in sunlight.

Prahran House feels warm, soft and inviting. A deeply considered and nuanced approach to furnishings and decor means the spaces are sophisticated yet relaxed. In stark contrast to the buzzing inner-city streets outside, the home is a calm oasis for a busy family.

A sensitive renovation balancing modern design principles with moments of heritage charm, Prahran House by Odyssey Architecture is a place of tranquility and respite. With ease and grace, the stately Victorian home quietly enters its next era.
