Launched at Melbourne Design Week 2025, Dutoit’s MASS table lamp comes in classic walnut and future-forward HDPE, both possessing a timeless sculptural form.

Named for the Latin word ‘massa’, which means a gathered body or mass, the MASS table lamp from Dutoit is a sculptural light that blends sustainable materials with the Melbourne studio’s trademark refined craftsmanship. “With its sculptural presence and compact scale, MASS offers versatility across a range of interiors,” says studio founder, Dirk du Toit. “It holds space both physically and perceptually, shaping its surroundings as both an object and a source of light.”

While the materiality may seem wildly different, the duo possesses a distinct throughline – small-scale monolithic forms that are bold, timeless and sinuous.

MASS comes in two iterations: sustainably sourced walnut and 100 per cent post-consumer recycled high-density polyethylene (HDPE). While the materiality may seem wildly different, the duo possesses a distinct throughline – small-scale monolithic forms that are bold, timeless and sinuous. “I wanted MASS to sit somewhere between utility and sculpture – an object with presence, not just function,” adds du Toit. “The geometry is precise, but the material variation ensures no two pieces are ever identical.”

The HDPE iteration, called Jungle Mix, has a stippled, marbled appearance that subtly shifts depending on the recycled content available at the time of production. It embodies the studio’s commitment to circular materiality and lessening its environmental footprint, ensuring that waste destined for landfill is given a second life in beautiful, enduring objects.

Both lamps are CNC-machined, a process that “reveals a rich, stratified composition that celebrates the inherent character of its materials”.

Both lamps are CNC-machined, a process that “reveals a rich, stratified composition that celebrates the inherent character of its materials,” says du Toit. Natural variations in both the timber and the HDPE mean that every light is subtly different in terms of grain, tone and colour.

MASS was launched at Melbourne Design Week 2025 in an exhibition called ‘Here & There’, curated by du Toit and showcasing new furniture, lighting and homewares designed and crafted locally. Works from Australian-based collaborators included a photographic series from the Sicilian island of Pantelleria, an animated furniture assembly sequence, a signature scented candle hand-blended in Sydney and a wool textile produced locally.
