Sculpture, form and function: they’re the three key principles that form the ethos of Northern Rivers-based lighting design brand Crete Studio. Led by husband and wife Nick and Sarah Wilson, the studio works with concrete, transforming the brutalist material into something more fluid and artful. With their distinctive marbling, organic textures and hand-pigmented colours, the lights push the boundaries of concrete, moving beyond its industrial grey stereotype.

“Each piece reveals its own personality through raw textures, tonal shifts and natural imperfections.”

The result is lighting that brings warmth and a nuanced depth to interior spaces. Sarah is the creative force behind the brand, designing and curating, while Nick’s two decades of electrical expertise ensure every piece is just as considered in function as it is in form, from conception through to installation. Concrete makes for a versatile material, fluidly taking on pigments and finishes for a custom look and feel, with textures ranging from sleek and modern to rustic and natural.

“We treat concrete like a craft, measuring, mixing and refining with care,” Sarah explains. “Each piece reveals its own personality through raw textures, tonal shifts and natural imperfections. Easy to care for and made to last, these surfaces tell a story – and no two are ever the same.”

These considered, handmade lumieres have brought sculptural presence and gentle illumination to a wide range of luxury homes and commercial projects.

Each Crete Studio piece is hand-pigmented and crafted following a seven-step process – from ideation to installation. Starting with a blank concrete canvas shaped into an organic form, the dry concrete is then combined with coloured oxides, cold water and ice to maintain workability. (The iron oxides create colour that’s genuine and long-lasting.) Glass fibres are added for strength, keeping each item light yet durable. The mix is poured into custom moulds, set for 24 hours, then left to breathe for seven days. Once cleaned and sealed with a premium finish, Nick fits and prepares each piece for installation.

These considered, handmade lumieres have brought sculptural presence and gentle illumination to a wide range of luxury homes and commercial projects. The Wirru wall sconce, with its organic bowl-like form, introduces soft light and natural elegance to Jóia Hair Studio in Byron Bay, designed by Sarah Ellison Creative. In MAD Studio’s Willow project in Adelaide, the intimate living spaces feature the Fluted wall light, a scalloped cylindrical design that comes in earthy shades including sand, moss, terracotta and charcoal, inspired by the Australian landscape. The Large Hakea  pendant, whose raw, textured surface lends an earthy contrast to its inviting glow, adds warmth and character to Coopers Shoot residence by MMK Architects.

The Wilsons pour thought and care into every light they make, and that’s something no machine or automated process can ever replicate.

The natural world is a continuous source of inspiration for Crete Studio. The Floret wall sconce is an organic, minimalist piece that captures the fleeting beauty of a blooming flower, its petals serving as a catchall for light, casting depth and shadows across walls. The Gibum wall sconce is named for the Bundjalung word for moon, and references the ever-present lunar cycle above Australian skies. Raw in texture but sophisticated in form, it brings a sense of rugged groundedness to any space it inhabits.

What sets Crete Studio apart is intention. The Wilsons pour thought and care into every light they make, and that’s something no machine or automated process can ever replicate. The result is lights marked by texture, shifts in tone and colour and innate imperfections. Built to last and crafted from locally sourced materials, each piece carries a light environmental footprint, with the option to incorporate recycled materials where possible.
