Designed through a close collaboration between architecture and interior design practice Smyth & Smyth and Annie Bowen Design, Bronte House balances robust architecture with warm, layered interiors shaped by honest materiality and everyday family living. Located in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, Bronte House was conceived as the family home of interior designer Annie Bowen, whose long-standing admiration for Smyth & Smyth laid the foundation for a highly collaborative design process.
While she’s consistently renovated heritage properties, Bowen embraced the opportunity to build from the ground up, working alongside the practice from the earliest concept stages to create a home where architecture and interiors feel intrinsically connected. United by a shared appreciation for natural materials, thoughtful detailing and timeless design, the team crafted a home that responds equally to daily life and long-term longevity.
Although compact in footprint, Bronte House comfortably accommodates a family with three teenagers through careful planning and a considered approach to spatial organisation. Responding to its coastal setting, the material palette balances the robustness of concrete and natural stone with the warmth of timber, creating interiors that feel both enduring and relaxed. Natural light moves freely through the home, animating textured surfaces throughout the day and reinforcing a connection to the landscape beyond. Rather than relying on overt coastal references, the residence draws on material honesty and restraint to establish a distinctly Australian sense of place.
Natural stone plays an important role in reinforcing the home’s material language. Ijen Blue quartzite from CAV’ART Designer Stone features prominently in the kitchen – the heart of the home – where its striking blue-grey movement introduces depth and permanence against the restrained palette of concrete and timber. In the bathrooms, Silver Shadow offers a quieter expression, extending the project’s commitment to timeless, honest materiality.
