Upside-Down Back-to-Front House by Cater Williamson Architects is named for the unconventional planning that allows the architecture to negotiate the constraints of a tight and steep site. Drawing from Japanese ideas of entry by creating a series of thresholds, Cater Williamson designed the house with maximum circulation, celebrating the unexpectedness that only a constrained site would afford.
As a true gem of contemporary, conservative Australian architecture, the house utilises a robust palette of materials consisting of sandstone walls, solid timber elements and polished concrete.
