57 Martin Street by Neometro
Comprised of six townhouses, 57 Martin Street champions sustainably conscious design through a modest and tactile palette. Neometro has advocated for both functionality and comfort, seeing liveability emphasised through every facet of the development.
Located in Thornbury, Victoria, 57 Martin Street is a celebration of collaboration, seeing development, design and landscape come together to form a series of contemporary homes. The townhouses encompass spacious living and dining areas, three bedrooms and private gardens crafted by Mud Office. Guided by passive design principles, the homes are carefully shaped; Neometro has ensured functionality and liveability remain at the forefront of the design process. Materiality plays a large role in this, seeing concrete, timber and terracotta take precedence over other materials as a way for the structures to endure the elements and to also ensure a gentle and gradual ageing process.
“Behind every Neometro project is the understanding that we are the conductors of an entire orchestra, which harmonises to produce the finest outcome,” explains Jeff Provan, Neometro design director. This sentiment is threaded throughout each element of 57 Martin Street, seeing an authenticity behind each design decision. The external aesthetic of the townhouses aligns with the surrounding streetscape, maintaining a sense of scale and restrained form. The simplicity of the rectangular structure is made richer by its dedication to its material palette. The interiors also favour a textured palette, seeing tiles add warmth and depth, while painted exposed brick walls provide visual interest. The townhouses feature high ceilings and large glass sliding doors, drawing light deep inside and providing a natural lift to the interior spaces.
Sustainability underpins every aspect of 57 Martin Street. This includes the implementation of cross ventilation and thermal insulation, double-glazed windows, energy-saving LED lighting, a 7-star NatHERS Energy Rating, an underground rainwater tank used for both toilets and the gardens, and the infrastructure for solar panels to ensure seamless installation. Where possible, locally made products have been used in order to minimise the development’s carbon footprint. The gardens feature robust plants that can withstand Melbourne’s varied weather, while retractable awnings can be used to temper the sun’s heat during summer.
Celebrating the strengths of collaboration, 57 Martin Street is a sustainably conscious building. Through not only careful planning but also with considered foresight, Neometro prioritises function and form, using textured materials and sustainable methods to produce a series of homes that embody liveability.
