Alpine by Ralston Architects
In New York State’s Hudson Valley, acclaimed firm Ralston Architects creates Alpine, a spectacular home that sits seamlessly in its pristine surrounds.
For Ralston Architects, based in Virginia, United States, exploration of – and sensitivity to – place is a central tenet of all the work the practice undertakes. It’s a philosophy that comes fully to life in Alpine, a stunning three-level home in the luxurious Silo Ridge Field Club development in the Hudson Valley, about two hours out of New York City. “This is architecture that listens to the land, where every line and texture enhances the dialogue between structure and setting,” says practice founder and principal Warren Ralston.
Alpine stands sentinel on a Silo Ridge hillside, with sweeping vistas of the undulating, ever-changing landscape of the valley courtesy of floor-to-ceiling glazing – a feature that also facilitates a deep sense of indoor-outdoor connection. “It’s a home designed to dissolve boundaries, both visual and physical,” says Ralston. “The expansive windows frame the landscape, allowing natural light and seasonal beauty to animate every corner.”
Organic materiality is also key in fostering the home’s connection to its environment. Externally, grey timber siding and board-form concrete create a light and subtle presence, and flow seamlessly into the interiors, where they complement silvery-brown stone, timber cabinetry and a considered curation of neutral-toned furniture. “The muted, organic materials really allow the residence to recede into the landscape.”
The floorplan creates spaces for both gathering and retreat. The lower level – where stone-clad feature walls and Corral Board cladding imbue a sense of warmth – is dedicated to entertaining, with a games room, billiards lounge, golf simulator and wet bar. This level also extends out to the expansive terrace and pool deck, which Ralston describes as “an oasis of leisure and mindfulness, complete with a heated changing- room, Zen garden, sauna and cold plunge pool.”
The middle level comprises a grand room with soaring ceilings, dominated by a stone-clad fireplace and striking modern chandelier; a dining room and adjacent wine room – “a focal point of the dining experience that is both artistic and functional”; and an expansive kitchen, where timber cabinetry is offset by swathes of opulent white stone. These spaces share omnipresent views of the landscape, adding to the sense of calm and serenity.
This level also houses the beautifully appointed main bedroom, a tranquil haven where “vaulted ceilings, panoramic windows and spa-inspired amenities elevate the space, creating a retreat where the routines of life transform into moments of indulgence.” Guest suites occupy the top floor, where views over the lake provide the perfect backdrop to the warm, welcoming interiors.
Despite its size (585 square metres), Ralston Architects – which was named as one of Forbes magazine’s Top 200 Residential Architects in America in 2025 – has created a residence that feels both intimate and grounded, a home where spaces flow effortlessly, where indoors and outdoors meld seamlessly and where nature never feels very far away.
