Conscious of balancing key attributes of aspect, prospect and refuge, Kennedy Nolan optimises the spectacular site of Always in such an enviable, far-removed, natural location. Kennedy Nolan aligns the proposed form along the coast, structurally stabilising it amid its dynamic cliffside terrain.

Intended to eventually be enveloped by the native landscape, the form of Always weaves itself intricately and seamlessly within the surrounds. Previously occupied by an existing dwelling on site, the everchanging coastal conditions meant the original structure would have had a limited future. Replacing it became the most obvious solution. Ultimately needing to withstand the harsh coastal climate, potential erosion and wind conditions, anchoring the form in place with strong, stable materials was a priority from the outset. Upon the building’s 15-metre-deep structural piles, Kennedy Nolan proposes an elevated shelter that aims to remain unchanged in place for many years to come.

Wanting to take advantage of the outward elements of the site and provide a safe harbour for the owners, the form needed to respond organically to the natural elements in place. Intended to become a permanent residence, the nature of its occupation expanded the requirements of the brief. As an occasionally visited home, a level of low-maintenance solidity underpins the finishes throughout. The planted landscape arrangement is also designed to interact with the site and its conditions, changing and evolving over time. Planned to eventually encompass much of the structure, the stone and other hard masonry elements will soften through an engagement with nature.

Timber and other materials form part of the same story, where time and place eventually leave their mark on the architectural features. Like any home, particularly those within extraordinary landscapes such as this, being able to remain connected to the outdoors enhances the sense of immersion and acts as a reminder of place. Whilst a more urban and restricted site might call for an inward approach, this needed both opportunities to simultaneously retreat and engage. The core functions of the residence are defined by its connections and expressions of aspect, prospect and refuge. Warm and familiar, Always combines a strength of character with a cocooning coastal feel. By responding specifically to the site and taking key learnings from the previous home, Kennedy Nolan proposes a withstanding structure of permanence, allowing for an immersion and connection beyond the bounding walls.
