Taking inspiration from the humble brick, Anderson Road Residence is the combining of personality, place and heritage into the one space in reflection of its owners. B.E. Architecture forms a well-executed balance between form and function, referencing generous proportions and scale while embedding warmth throughout.

Comprised of simple forms and a grounding in classical rhythm, Anderson Road Residence is located in Hawthorn and draws on the familiar red brick residence as the incubus for the resulting family home. As the main materiality used both structurally and exposed as a treated surface inside and out, the brick sets the tone and level of textural richness for the home, allowing other inserted elements such as glazing and metalwork to sit as an offer of contrasting balance. Across the site, extended volumes and linear elements are extruded upwards and outwards to accentuate the sense of scale and create a grandeur within the home as it presents to the street and engages with the landscape. B.E. Architecture forms a unique yet connected home, which becomes an extension of the heritage of the owners.

While the materials connect back to a traditional home of the area, the way in which they have been brought together to form the building is not traditional and instead presents as a contemporary and refreshing interpretation.

With clear vistas carved into the overall form to create connections between the built and the natural, Anderson Road Residence is built by Dome Building Projects and sits surrounded by landscape designed by Myles Baldwin Design. Throughout, the formation of spaces and how they connect creates a series of internal light courtyards that bring both natural illumination deep into the home while also allowing the overall form to breathe. Able to be opened, these areas are filled with a tropically inspired collation of plantings, creating the feeling of being in another place and alternate climate.

Together with the red brick, similar blush tones are used throughout, with timber added to bring in more natural and textural elements into the interior. While the materials connect back to a traditional home of the area, the way in which they have been brought together to form the building is not traditional and instead presents as a contemporary and refreshing interpretation. Moments of compression and release form the journey through the home, creating places to retreat and be reflective, while other more open areas then spill out into the landscape.

Throughout, the formation of spaces and how they connect creates a series of internal light courtyards that bring both natural illumination deep into the home while also allowing the overall form to breathe.

Anderson Road Residence becomes an impressive display of craft and the work of local artisans, ensuring a continued legacy. B.E. Architecture has created a home of public architectural proportions and stylisation, one which will no doubt age gracefully in place.
