Limerick Lane transforms into a dual-purpose structure, serving as both a residence and tasting room for the adjoined winery. Matthew David Bowles of TenBooks, Erik Kramer of Social Studio and Jill Shadek collaborate to bring their collective vision to life, integrating the philosophes of the vineyard into the design approach.

Originally, a charming, shingle-clad bungalow stood in place of the current Limerick Lane residence. Through a meticulous renovation, the focus shifted towards combining contemporary comforts with its rich history. Nestled amid the picturesque hills of Healdsburg, California, the building mirrors the care and principles underlying the surrounding landscape and vineyard, as well as the lifestyle preferences of the owners. The decision to integrate a home with a tasting room, a joint idea by architects Matthew and Erick alongside interior designer Jill Shadek, embodies a holistic approach that guided the project according to the owners’ vision.

The result is a sanctuary that respects and embraces the natural allure of its environment.

With a beautiful vista overlooking the Cole Ranch Winery and California oak trees, the immediate surroundings of the residence provide ample space for the family’s goats and dogs, as well as allow their daughter to fully enjoy the expansive landscape. The result is a sanctuary that respects and embraces the natural allure of its environment. Engaging local artisans to leave their creative mark, the exterior is clad in blackened cypress timber using the traditional Japanese technique of Shou-Sugi-Ban, ensuring the structure seamlessly melds into the landscape. Further enhancing the ambience, earthy tones and natural materials infuse warmth and tactile richness into the interior, adding depth and movement to the surfaces.

Throughout the property, subtle nods to modernist design are woven in, establishing a connection between the contemporary nature of the home and the iconic mid-century style prevalent in California. Terrazzo flooring serves as a timeless link between these eras. Wanting to combine the dwelling’s heritage with a welcoming warmth, the kitchen and living areas exude a cosy atmosphere, enhanced by the inclusion of timber joinery to discreetly house amenities. Serving as focal points within the abode, the warmth of these spaces anchors the residence in place, while framed apertures outline views of the surroundings.

Despite budget constraints, a commitment to fulfilling the project brief ensures that the site’s potential is fully realised. Employing a restrained approach, TenBooks, Social Studio and Jill Shadek make sure the clients’ mindful connection to the landscape is maintained in their daily interactions, strengthening their shared philosophies.
