With Us at the Centre – Aplós by Helen Kontouris and James Richardson Furniture

Words by Joseph Brown

With more than two decades of expertise and a passion for human-centred design, Helen Kontouris has collaborated with James Richardson Furniture (JRF) to design Aplós – a visually striking range that focuses on supporting the complex needs of modern interior environments.

Helen Kontouris and JRF Creative and Brand Director Georgia Danos have a long-standing relationship within the industry. They set to work on Aplós with a specific dialogue in mind – create a collection that sits and feels distinctive among JRF’s current offerings whilst allowing the design to pull from the people and spaces it occupies. With a strong focus on people at the forefront of the design process, each piece offers elegant and distinctive design across aged care, residential, workplace and education sectors.

The Village Plump, The Village and The Ripple each celebrate authenticity and remarkable craftmanship, emanating an emotional resonance that leaves a lasting impression.

The Village, as its name suggests, is a family of lounges, all of which offer a comforting, environment for collaboration and relaxation. Featuring slim line, sleek movements and gentle tones that offer a homely comfort, each element contributes to a cohesive yet delicate look. The enduring quality of the design sees intricately upholstered and stitched seams combine with sewed piping elements, showcasing the rigorous attention taken to handcraft each product.

The practical elements of the partner collection, The Village Plump, put versatility at the forefront. An elegant and agile seating system, The Village Plump is an engaging furniture piece that blends seamlessly into contemporary spaces. Defined by distinctive foam pieces, each design can be tailored for the needs of individual spaces, creating unique configurations by fixing parts together with clip brackets. Informed by person-centred design philosophies, The Village and The Village Plump both foster connection, community and a sense of dignity – particularly in the health and aged care sectors – in their ability to transform interiors.

The final piece from Aplós is The Ripple – a collection of sleek and modern tables, with ripples reminiscent of the soft, fluid movements of undulating waves along the Aegean coastline. Featuring dynamic form, built from natural hardwood and finished with a lightly textured enamelled aluminium blade stem, The Ripple champions the natural grain of its timber, allowing it to seamlessly blend into contemporary spaces.

James Richardson Furniture continues as one of the leading design destinations in welcoming Aplós. The Village Plump, The Village and The Ripple each celebrate authenticity and remarkable craftmanship, emanating an emotional resonance that leaves a lasting impression.
