Since its beginnings in 2019, Armadillo has forged a global reputation as a brand not only dedicated to safekeeping traditional craftsmanship through its handmade rugs but ensuring everything it produces has minimal impact on the environment. Now, the female-founded company has announced a design evolution – introducing pattern to its portfolio for the first time.

As its name suggests, the Linea collection surveys both structure and lineage in a series of five rugs where traditional motifs are reinterpreted with subtlety and sensitivity. “Linea is an exploration of pattern, approached with the same restraint and integrity that has always defined Armadillo,” the brand’s co-founder, Jodie Fried, explains. “Rather than drawing a line between past and present, the collection honours time-honoured techniques while allowing them to settle naturally into contemporary life. Pattern is present but moderated, emerging through touch, material and process instead of overt decoration.”

Linear forms are key here: transmuted through a contemporary lens, lines become subtle motifs, shaped by oxidisation, tonal depth and the natural irregularities of the hand-crafted process. “Patterns are passed from hand to hand, each time subtly transformed,” Fried says. “With each repetition, edges soften, proportions shift and colour settles, resulting in designs that feel layered, lived with and inherently nuanced.”

Pattern is present in each of the five rugs but in a way that feels seamlessly contemporary, designed for how we live now. The Allegra, in Afghan wool, features a diffused read of traditional border and medallion themes. Crafted with a Persian hand-knot technique and with a trimmed cut pile, it presents a soft, tactile grounding in comforting shades including rich Cinnamon. Medallion motifs and a warm earthy palette with flecks of subtle green define Basilica in the Clove colourway. Hand-knotted from wool on a cotton warp, the slender design has a chromatic depth, lightly textured cut pile and considered detailing.

Adagio, meanwhile, reimagines antique textiles in a hand-knotted, pure wool iteration whose oxidised surface gently tightens and curls the fibres, embodying the piece with a time-worn quality. “By allowing texture to lead where pattern might otherwise dominate, Adagio brings discerning artistry to its surroundings.” The fine pile and lower knot count of Sonata create a supple, grid-like texture in hand-spun Afghan wool, while the Minuet’s calm, abstract motif is intentionally subtle, allowing tone and texture to play a starring role.

“Its surface has a subtle dimensionality, as hand-spun yarns dip and rise, creating quiet variation within a consistent plane.”

Released in tandem with the Linea collection is the luxurious Latitude, which represents a first for Armadillo: a fine, flat-weave rug in linen. “Its surface has a subtle dimensionality, as hand-spun yarns dip and rise, creating quiet variation within a consistent plane. Each colourway – from the cool calm of Beluga to the richer hues of Caramel, Roan and Pine – highlights the fibre’s inherent lustre and exceptional hand feel.”

Additionally, one of the company’s perennial best-sellers, Odessa, receives an updated palette, with Banksia, Partridge and Travertine added to the existing Arborio and Caraway colourways. Zinc and Kohl are now also available in bespoke sizing. “This expansion brings renewed clarity to a familiar form, extending Odessa’s versatility without altering its essence,” Fried says. “In doing so, it reflects how the Linea collection honours tradition through subtle evolution rather than reinvention.”
