Avian Apartment, set within an iconic Harry Seidler building in Brisbane, saw Ali Holgar Interior Design take inspiration from both the original architecture and European design sensibilities, drawing on a selection of art and objects to express personality.

In refreshing the Avian Apartment, the influence of its existing design language was balanced with both a European aesthetic and a contemporary Australian approach. This balancing act results in a home that expresses a unique sense of individuality. With a playful inquisitiveness, Ali Holgar Interior Design combined custom joinery, artwork and furniture that captured the essence and spirit of the owner. Previously a home of starkly contrasting finishes and furniture, the new works are about balance, creating a sense of calm while leaning in to a playful, dynamic quality.

Avian Apartment is a home of connected balance, both within its encompassing walls and to the architectural intent that houses them.

Bringing together influencing elements of the European aesthetic, together with a contemporary Australian approach, the resulting home expresses a unique sense of individuality.

Throughout, flowing forms are echoed in the pieces that dot the interior and create a sense of deliberate purpose throughout the home. The organic and the structured come together with a sense of ease, with the interiors acting as an evolution of the architecture and both expressly complementing one another. Through close collaboration between the designer and the client, an aesthetic that expresses both the context of the apartment and its occupier was easily achieved. The sense of harmony is evident throughout, in which contrasting elements both act together and counteract one another.

Created within a short timeframe, Avian Apartment nevertheless is imbued with a curated and considered approach. The cleverly integrated joinery elements provide support for the everyday requirements of the apartment, while concealing their functionality seemingly effortlessly. The layered furniture and artwork allow a glimpse into the personality of its owner, expressly connecting the physical space to a sense of self. Timber and textured plaster create a subtle warmness, and the pockets of colour, textiles and natural stone add variation and richness.

Taking inspiration from its existing and surrounding design language, and as a celebration of its past, the proposed is a balancing act.

From its curated contents to the custom wall murals by LA artist Jessalyn Brooks called ‘The Avians’ (in refence to the outlook over the city skyline) a sense of balance prevails. Ali Holgar Interior Design has brought both liveliness and calm to the space and, through an understanding and appreciation of its architectural context, has uncovered the beauty within.
