Bangalore Residence by Manna Made and Bellhaus Design Office
Bangalore Residence is expanded and restored, retaining its historical authenticity as a tribute to the original home on site. Manna Made and Bellhaus Design Office propose a recessive and luminous volume that is connected to the surrounding natural environment.
Manna Made and Bellhaus Design Office collaborate on the reworking of Bangalore Residence, blending its historical charm with contemporary liveability. The approach integrates elements of the past and present, achieving a balance of form, scale and lightness throughout the property. While maintaining the original Edwardian facade and formal rooms, both architect and designer opt to remove an existing lean-to and introduce a new addition, strategically separated by an open courtyard. This spatial divide serves as a transition point between eras, allowing air and light to flow into the central living spaces while symbolising the transformation of the home.
During the project, maintaining a delicate balance between preservation and innovation became a fundamental principle. Adding to this was the notion of achieving harmony – both in form and function – and ensuring the expanded structure integrated with the streetscape facade while meeting the needs of the owners. The introduction of a single-storey extension not only expanded the living areas but also harnessed passive energy to power the home. It was also important to imbue the residence with a distinct identity reflective of the owners’ vision while honouring the historic charm of the property.
Rather than concealing the distinctions between eras, these differences are embraced and celebrated. Preserving the historical integrity of the facade was key to complying with heritage planning regulations. Conversely, the contemporary extension is characterised by sleek lines and a minimalist aesthetic. Each design choice reflects a timeless and refined sensibility, grounded in a monochromatic palette that exudes the warmth needed for a family dwelling. Creating spaces that extend into the surroundings was a priority for the owners, allowing the living areas to blend with the natural elements and become focal points throughout the site.
A serene retreat in its own right, Bangalore Residence seamlessly blends old and new elements and offers both open communal spaces and secluded sanctuaries. Manna Made and Bellhaus Design Office have upheld the same level of craftsmanship and refinement, ensuring the enduring appeal of the home for years to come.
