A singular new fabric collection from Basil Bangs, produced at an 80-year-old Italian mill, brings the colours and landscapes of Italy’s Aeolian Islands to alfresco Australia.

Alluring yet untamed, Italy’s Aeolian Islands are renowned for their volcanic landscapes set against cerulean seas, and have been beckoning visitors for centuries with their mysterious caves and clear waters. Now, the colours and landscapes of this lush archipelago are reimagined in a singular new range of fabrics by Australian outdoor brand Basil Bangs.

Basil Bangs founder Mike Durante says the range is a tribute to both the beauty of the Aeolian Islands and to Italy’s “rich history of manufacturing and design”.

The Italian Collection nods to the heritage of Mike Durante, who co-founded Basil Bangs with his wife Krista Huebner in 2009, and whose family has roots on the Aeolian island of Lipari. Durante says the range is a tribute to both the beauty of the island cluster and to Italy’s “rich history of manufacturing and design”. The brand has partnered with an 80-year-old Italian mill to craft the exclusive fabric collection, which is available by the metre for custom upholstery.

Basil Bangs is also re-releasing new versions of existing signature products, including its Luxury Towel and Outdoor Cushion designs, with the evocative new fabrics, as well as launching a clutch of new products – including a director’s chair and outdoor ottomans – to celebrate the fresh creations.

With Italian la dolce vita at its heart, the new collection also reflects Australia’s uniquely laidback alfresco lifestyle.

Though it has Italian la dolce vita at its heart, the new collection also reflects Australia’s uniquely laidback alfresco lifestyle. Earthy stripes paint a white background, the yellow of the sun shining over the islands fades into a peachy-orange echoing the colourful pastel buildings, while the archipelago’s vegetation is brought to life in a calming green ombre that marvellously decorates outdoor umbrellas.

The Aeolians are famous for the sparkling sapphire sea that surrounds them. Those magnificent waters are given their dues in the collection’s range of blue-themed fabrics. Deep blue stripes of varying widths are set off by a stark white backdrop in one design, while in another, uniform stripes bring a nautical aura to the material, which upholsters deck chairs and Basil Bangs’ signature, generously sized umbrellas, among other products. The islands’ volcanic soils set against the deep blue sea and the clear skies above are reimagined into a blue-and-white ombre that effortlessly evokes the Aeolian colour palette.

Each fabric and product harmonises with Australian outdoor spaces, whether poolside, by the beach or on a spacious patio. And despite the collection’s Italian origins, it has been designed to brave the harsh conditions of the Australian great outdoors. “This a collection with an Italian heart and Australian soul,” says Huebner.
