Much like Beyond Hawthorn is in the business of movement – increasing movement, correcting movement and enabling movement – the reductionist approach of Adam Kane Architects sees the clinic’s newest initiative in Hawthorn with spaces that interlock and flow into one another with ease.

Three core characteristics – reflection, translucency and texture – are interpreted in different ways and connect with the primary goal of engaging the senses. Sight, smell, touch and sound are essential in Beyond Hawthorn’s approach to treatment and engagement with clients, so these needed to be evident in the resulting design. Right from entry there is a feeling of calm and composure, which is highlighted by materials that convey the impression of effortlessness and lack of ornamentation. Used prominently, brushed aluminium is applied liberally to the vertical surfaces and although this could dominate the experience, it instead channels motion throughout. As a balance, other added elements disrupt the linear nature of the panels and create screening moments, adding privacy and a sense of quietude. Layers of linen then contribute a softness to the space, while also speaking to the story of movement as they respond to air flowing through them.

Beyond Hawthorn believes the practitioners’ individualised approach is what sets them apart from their competitors, and the overall perception of control and rhythm created in the spaces reinforces a sense of confidence in their approach. The Hawthorn clinic’s calm environment feels blissfully escapist – an ideal place of renewal and healing.
