American Outpost – Venroy Unveils New Boutique in Montauk, Long Island
Over the past decade, Sydney-headquartered leisurewear brand Venroy has garnered a loyal following in Australia and beyond. Known for its easy yet elevated silhouettes for both men and women, the brand operates six brick-and-mortar boutiques across three Australian states, in addition to a seasonal concept space, opened last year, on the Italian island of Capri. Its latest retail initiative, in the small coastal hamlet of Montauk, on the southern shores of Long Island, New York, marks the brand’s maiden outpost in North America.
As a location, Montauk is ideal for Venroy. Historically, the coastal town served as a welcome retreat for holidaying Manhattanites, but the pandemic saw a steady rise in permanent residents, resulting in a bolstered commercial ecosystem. Today, Venroy’s Montauk outpost occupies a 93-square-metre retail space in a low-rise structure on South Etna Avenue built in the Tudor style.
Designed by Venroy’s longstanding in-house architect, Sarah I’Anson, the interior is characterised by warm tones and wood-panelled surfaces. The brand’s signature Venroy Hotel concept – an embodiment of the unspoken wonders of travel – is writ large across the boutique, with sartorial and spatial constructs at once channelling a whimsical spirit of escapism. The boutique echoes the marine milieu and nearby boatyards through an overarching palette of raw marine plywood, ebonised oak and raw steel, combined with overlays of canvas and cashmere textiles. Equally, the furniture and objets d’art straddle form and function, melding into the coastal setting while serving to elevate customer experience.
Venroy’s Montauk boutique currently carries a full range of men’s and women’s apparel, swimwear, accessories and footwear, in addition to a seasonal selection, christened Holiday 23, featuring versatile, travel-light suitcase staples. Another novelty, exclusive to the Montauk outpost, is the Venroy Montauk Merchandise capsule, emblazoned by nautical leitmotifs that pay homage to the legendary fishing village. With a local sensitivity and a distinctly Australian ethos, the outpost is emblematic of Venroy’s emerging global identity.
