Located in an enviable enclave of Mosman, Black Diamond combines both a layered elevation of detail and a disconnected stillness across its multiple levels. YSG proposes a destination-style home that draws from international luxury hotel references in forming a response of personal expression and animation.

With calming coastal outlooks, an openness and flow connect the interior experience of Black Diamond to the surrounding aspect. Through tonal and textural elements combined with a richly curated combination of surfaces and sculptural additions, it is the curation of key objects, artwork, lighting and furniture that create moments of unique curiosity. With the home as the ultimate expression of self, the coming together of its parts is both deeply personal and connective to the owners, ensuring that they are also sharing a piece of themselves when they invite guests in. Building up through an unexpected sequencing of entry and movement through the home, YSG crafts a uniquely custom interpretation on the contemporary coastal home.

Wanting to create their own version of famed and favoured boutique hotels, the owners sought to bring an equally nomadic feel inward. Maintaining connections outward as reminders of the proximity to the ocean was also key, ensuring natural light and air are within close reach throughout. The creation of a home that felt both light and open yet had the depth of someone who has travelled far to arrive at a special custom destination provided a challenge in itself. Avoiding excessive embellishments while still elevating the typical residential approach then also informed the planning and journey of moving through the various zones. Spread over multiple levels, it is the living areas that ensure the coming together, gathering, recharging and entertainment sit at the heart of the home and celebrate a generosity of scale.

From what was once an entirely different home altogether, the existing three levels are transformed through integrating a more purposeful use of space. The previously grey and dark spaces become light-filled and warmly articulated moments that urge an interaction. Balancing texture with grander gestures, the kitchen features a green natural stone monolithic island as its focus, supplemented by light flesh tones above and behind. The result is sculptural, playful and inviting – a philosophy used as the foundation throughout, both internally and stretching to the surrounding outdoor areas as a utilisation of the entire site.

From the initial entry through each vertical transition across levels, Black Diamond is the result of crafting a home filled with character and depth. YSG brings a heightening of place and people together and, in turn, offers an enduring legacy of connection in the process.
