Can eclecticism feel composed rather than complex? In a world where neutrality has become the expected default, Rachel Tidswell, principal interior designer of her eponymous studio, responds with a flair for spaces anchored in bold expression, spirited colour and personal narrative. In the Bondi Junction project, a 239-square-metre, five-bedroom residence, Tidswell sought to realise her client’s vision for a functional family home imbued with understated grandeur. Located on Kenilworth Street, the home is grounded in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs and its tightly grained residential tapestry.

The home’s character distils the neighbourhood’s era-defining houses, drawing on the language of intimate building volumes, raised verandahs addressing the streetscape and shared building lines. The dwelling’s two-level floor plan reads like a string of linked beads, with spaces that are contiguously connected. Daylight and views of the surrounding landscape also remain constant. “The fluid transition from the interiors to the garden ultimately anchors the home, reinforcing a layered yet unified narrative,” Tidswell highlights.

The deep corridor serves as a spatial procession, its length oriented towards the light that saturates the spaces at the far end. Curated artwork and sculptural lighting accompany the arches original to the structure, celebrating the generous proportions the building always held, newly awakened in Tidswell’s eyes.

Tucked into the home’s quieter corners, the bedrooms reflect Tidswell’s signature penchant for tonal play, with hues of blush, grey and olive creating distinct moods within each space.

Characterful marble defines the kitchen in broad strokes, turning its open-plan expanse into something of a gallery. Brass accents thread warmth through the space, allowing the kitchen to shift between a well-loved hub of daily life and the setting for family gatherings.

Tucked into the home’s quieter corners, the bedrooms reflect Tidswell’s signature penchant for tonal play, with hues of blush, grey and olive creating distinct moods within each space. In the main bedroom, there is a faint sense of romance, with a roaring pink tiger bust and striped bedspread that recall the charm of carnival marquees. The rooms, the designer notes, were not without their challenges: “A key challenge was working within strict building line limitations while ensuring the bedrooms felt generous and balanced.” The visual richness continues into the reconfigured bathrooms, where the interplay of colour is brought into closer alignment with the abode’s overall ethos.

The Bondi Junction project articulates that design is, in many instances, a devoted act of calibration – negotiating what is released and what must be retained. The home has been texturally deepened to offer its family something more: something that had always existed here, awaiting a new lease of life. Tidswell’s creative pursuit affirms that the most considered homes are not always built from scratch, but carefully honed, one eclectic choice, colour and stroke of light at a time.
