At Melbourne Design Week 2022, Broached Commissions presents Broached Recall Three: Fidele Luce, a creative and highly conceptual development in the Broached Recall series.

Founded in 2010 by Creative Director Lou Weiss, Broached Commissions is a production house with a focus on research and narrative-based work. The company commissions, creates and consults within the design industry. The research aspect of Broached Commissions seeks to unpack the history of design in the context of the modern world whilst the production side pushes the boundaries of how this history of design engages with its present.

Within its construction and its intricate surface design, Fidele Luce explores notions of capitalism and entrepreneurial flow, standing as a talisman of modern entrepreneurialism.

The ongoing body of work titled Recall began as an exploration of the ties between the 19th century origins of modernism and the heyday of the movement in the early 20th century. Broached enlisted graphic designer John Warwicker to map out this history. Along with this map, John created graphic patterns as a more abstract representation of the period. Broached Commissions then translated these patterns into technically detailed pieces that blur the line between furniture and sculpture.

Broached has now collaborated with Italian industrial designer Federico Gregorutti to create Recall Three: Fidele Luce. The result is a piece that is as conceptual as it is technical and that, once again, challenges the distinction between furniture and sculpture. Within its construction and its intricate surface design, Fidele Luce explores notions of capitalism and entrepreneurial flow, standing as a talisman of modern entrepreneurialism. The piece is constructed from both heritage and virgin timbers, as Broached is wont to do in its interrogation of the intersecting histories of design. Its plinth-like shape accommodates several drawers and compartments that are operated by a custom-made detachable magnetic handle.

The surface of the piece, as well as bearing the wood-grain stripes of its technical timber construction, is decorated with a lively design featuring circles in varying shades of blue. One circle engulfs the next before disappearing around a corner. Such bold and confident application of a motif is an exciting and unexpected thing to see. The colour, movement and harmony of the surface design contributes greatly to the dynamism of the overall piece.

Broached Recall Three: Fidele Luce sees Broached Commissions expanding its capacity to find originality within the history of design, newness within what has already been done. The company’s staunch commitment to research embedded practice, as labyrinthine as it may be at times, can simply be reduced to curiosity – a mindset that, logically, makes for the most curious and captivating pieces of all.
