Fusing Light – Brunswick East Residence by Studio Amble
Brunswick East Residence sees an existing heritage workers cottage rejuvenated through a holistic approach that encompasses natural light and lush landscaping. Studio Amble respectfully restores elements of the original home whilst weaving in new additions, paying homage to its origins through scale and a crafted approach.
Aligning with the historic streetscape, Brunswick East Residence’s façade remains unchanged. Whilst the streetscape aspect is preserved, the dual-story addition sits concealed from approach, tucked away and allowing the rhythm of the cottage row to be maintained. In fusing old and new, elements are designed cohesively – most notably the silhouette of the original pitched form is mirrored and extracted upward in the additional volume. In response to the tight and challenging site, Studio Amble uses restraint in composing the addition and navigates the site with measured lightness.
Ensuring the structure opened and embraced the landscape was key – the way in which the home functions and its ability to foster a seamless flow between inside and outside was vital to the brief. Whilst the original front rooms remain in place along with the brick facade, they form a clear separated zone from the rest of the home. The newer spaces follow an openly connected series of principles, culminating in the shared living, dining and kitchen space to the rear.
Taking advantage of the height of the new structure, the ceilings of the new addition follow the roof’s gabled design. The additional height created by exposing the roof shape increases the sense of scale and grandeur, allowing light to bounce across additional planes. A mostly neutral materiality palette is used throughout, binding the old and new through shared tones and bringing the home together with a commonality of lightness. The spaces feel larger through this use of cohesive materiality and with the orientations of openings towards sunlight.
