By challenging the conventional interfaces between residence and garden, Brush House navigates its corner allotment through blurring the traditional lines between inside and out. Leeton Pointon Architects + Interiors integrates a sweeping motion between the natural and the built, softening edges and encouraging movement throughout the residence and across thresholds.

Uniquely positioned in inner Melbourne’s Caulfield North, Brush House sits as a distinct structure that prominently occupies a corner allotment. Unlike the clearly defined outer edges of its neighbours, the home instead explores an alternate arrangement. A sense of fluidity is articulated from the outset, with the architectural shell of the home marked by sweeping soft curves of concrete that defy the typical rectilinear use of the material. Within the home, openings are peeled back and the organic curves continue as the interior takes form as a natural extension of the exterior. Leeton Pointon Architects + Interiors binds the site with a shared geometric and sweeping expression, reinforcing the home as a place of calm refuge.

The repositioning of the home to occupy a central location within the site allows an immersive feeling to be felt throughout. By creating a cohesive relationship between the built structure and the landscaping, the idea of residential architecture is put to the test. Underpinned by a flexibility and shared openness, transitions between inside and out are made easy through the careful treatment of glazing and how it reacts with the outer form. Thin framing allows the views outward to remain the focus, with a softening of light and subtle movements from ventilation hinting at the openness.

Bringing light deeper into the living areas of the home, sculptural oculi punch through the ceiling plane and animate the floor plate throughout the day. A muted palette of neutrals is warmed through textural elements and interaction with incoming light. The home is designed foremost for its growing family, providing them with a base to grow and retreat to.

Brush House sees the careful sculpting of its parts become a cohesive collection of elements that work together as pieces of a whole. Leeton Pointon Architects + Interiors focuses on integrating natural components to inspire the material palette and experience of the home.
