Spotlight – Cafes
TALEA West Village by ALA Studio
Manhattan, New York, United States
A cafe by day and bar by night, TALEA West Village is the third taproom for TALEA and the first female- and veteran-owned production brewery in New York City. Designed by ALA Studio, the new space reclaims the masculine identity of a West Village saloon to celebrate women’s voices and the local LGBTIQA+ community. With an open dining room and flexible seating options, the taproom is anchored by a bar that highlights TALEA’s extensive range of coffee and drinks. Detailed with classic saloon elements such as exposed brick, decorative moulding and brass accents, the space is further enriched with saffron- and mango-toned tiling, quartz countertops and stained oak, expressing the brand’s bold personality. Complemented with a variety of rooms such as The Revolution Room, which seats groups of eight to 10, and The Snug for larger gatherings, TALEA West Village is the ideal place for connecting and being a part of the vibrant community.

Grey Roasting Co by Studio 11:11
Hamilton, New Zealand
In 2022, Studio 11:11 was approached to create a flagship store for Grey Roasting Co, an established premium coffee roasting business based in New Zealand. Intertwining coffee production and consumption, Studio 11:11’s interior design of the Hamilton cafe emulates the calm stillness of a gallery. A large natural volcanic stone bench sits in the centre, with one side of the store flanked with open shelving units while the other provides storage and worktops with views through to the roastery. To complement the more industrial elements, soft fabrics, custom furniture pieces and a subdued textural palette were utilised. No bulky benchtop espresso machines can be seen as speciality equipment has been integrated into the central bench, so baristas and customers have clear sightlines. Offering a unique and distinctive cafe experience, Grey Roasting Co is imbued with a modern yet timeless aesthetic while rich material elements help to create a humble yet breathtaking space.

BEDST by Lekkier
Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia
After establishing a name for itself during the 2019 lockdowns through an e-commerce store, BEDST reached out to Lekkier in 2022 to help create a small, light-filled coffee shop in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, that showcases the best of Nordic coffee. Working closely with its clients, Lekkier transformed a 42-square-metre space into a one-stop shop that represents the clients’ story. By employing a restrained interior palette, Lekkier has allowed the merchandising of BEDST’s retail product range to shine. Additionally, the store is inspired by Nordic design cues, with materials and fixtures chosen for their tactile qualities. Terrazzo plinths sit on the floor while the walls are finished in a walnut veneer with benches delicately balanced to subtly communicate quality. Emphasising the owners’ quirky and unique sense of style, BEDST welcomes locals and visitors into an intimate space that celebrates art, sculptural furnishings, books and, above all else, coffee.
Everyday Coffee by NATIVE Design Workshop
Morningside, New Zealand
Influenced by director of NATIVE Design Workshop Janusz Choromański’s passion for being in spaces that feel like home, the construction and design of Everyday Coffee was a labour of love for Janusz and his family. NATIVE Design Workshop embraced a cost-effective, sustainable mindset to create a warm and intimate coffee shop. Matai and rimu timber were obtained from a nearby salvage yard to create a connection to the surrounds, while textural burgundy tiles recall a grandparents’ home. The family connection is seen with the concrete benchtop, which was poured on site by the owners and an uncle. As a central anchor for the coffee shop, the benchtop is the main focal point for baristas and customers alike. Simple and soulful in its form, Everyday Coffee is a home away from home.
