Cardrona Village By Monk Mackenzie Architects Issue 10 Commercial Feature The Local Project Image (3)

Cardrona Valley’s uniquely luna-esque landscape has inspired the proposed design by Monk Mackenzie Architects of Cardrona Village – a collection of bespoke architectural hotels and robust residential and hospitality offerings.

Consisting of three hotels and a collection of serviced apartments and residential units, Cardrona Village is designed using platonic forms to reflect the weight, gravitas and materiality of the alpine surroundings, as well as the simple nature of historic early settler buildings.

Wrapped in gabion stone baskets, the hotels appear as long low bars of textured stone. This gritty exterior is softened indoors with golden timbers and warm metals, and ground level spaces are activated through food and beverage provisions. Similarly, the residences are hunkered down into the landscape, with upper levels clad in Shou Sugi Ban charred timber to relate to the historic Cardrona pub over the road.

Currently in the master-planning phase, this project promises to be an elegant addition to Cardrona, resonating and appearing at one with its dramatic landscapes.
