Interior Design by Living Edge Design Studio

From a softening base, Chelsea Street Residence is layered with texture, colour, and tone to create a family home of encasing warmth and personality. Living Edge Design Studio injects a playful rigour through combining natural and geometric elements, enhancing the everyday for a young family within the existing architectural shell.

Located in Brighton, Chelsea Street Residence is the recalibration of an existing 1980s-era home, originally inspired by a Tuscan sensibility. In embracing a Mediterranean style, the home reflected a good connection to the natural elements, the landscape and natural light – all of which Living Edge Design Studio wanted to further accentuate within the home’s next chapter. By honouring and working within the outer constraints of the existing home, the new works become a reconfiguring of the interior spaces, where layering and the select curation of what is brought in plays a vital role. At the core of the ethos driving the project was a focus on creating a welcoming, light, and interesting series of spaces for its young family, allowing them to express themselves at the same time.

Overlaying a sense of rhythm became a key move in creating structure and order within the home. The replanned interior spaces ensure a better connection internally, while allowing for retreat spaces to be collated in certain areas and feel a sense of disassociation as well. The new needed to reflect how the family lives within a more contemporary arrangement, despite not moving any of the exterior elements. Built by SJR Building Group together with joinery by Industry Kitchens & Joinery, Chelsea Street Residence focuses on bringing a softness to both the texture of the materials and finishes and through the forms and shapes overlaid throughout. The rounding of edges allows for a more cohesive flow internally, while the use of pastel features animates the home at the same time.

Combining artwork, lighting, and furniture together with newly conceived kitchen and bathroom areas, the entirety of the interior is reworked. As the sun enters and leaves the various rooms, because of the curved elements and openings, the shadows and shapes that are cast have a similar softness. Cleverly integrated joinery allows for storage and the hiding of the inner workings of a home, enabling a curated setting of more expressive furniture and lighting to remain the focus.

Through a balanced approach, Chelsea Street Residence reignites an existing home. Living Edge Design Studio connects with the owners and enables their personalities to become expressed internally, cocooning them in place.
