Cliffside Residence
Located on the rocky coastline of Victoria, British Columbia, Cliffside Residence is shaped by Californian mid-century influence, with an indoor-outdoor sensibility expressed through a timeless earthy palette and playful moments of vibrancy.
Hunkered into steep terrain overlooking the Strait of Juan de Fuca, this light-filled home expresses softness and tactility through considered, unexpected gestures. Here, West Coast resilience and mid-century warmth combine in a fluid composition of durable materials and pops of colour, lending the dwelling a sense of ease.
“Its design emphasises familiar, timeless forms rather than overt references, with exposed beams, inside-out material continuity and a strong relationship between interior and exterior spaces.”
A collaboration between architect Chris Foyd of BoForm and interior design practice Bidgood, Cliffside Residence is a distinctive architectural response tailored to an exciting new chapter for the clients and their beloved pet. Moving from Québec to Victoria to be closer to their children, “the owners envisioned a home that could accommodate their love of art and design, support ageing in place and serve as a welcoming hub for family and friends,” says creative director, Kyla Bidgood. The house is an expression of connection and hospitality while also serving as an intimate retreat – a place to unwind and soak in panoramic southern vistas toward the Olympic Mountains.
Arranged across three stepped levels, the dwelling appears as a modest, low-lying structure that slowly reveals itself on descent. “Its design emphasises familiar, timeless forms rather than overt references, with exposed beams, inside-out material continuity and a strong relationship between interior and exterior spaces,” Bidgood explains. A gridded structure of expressed beams defines the upper living domain, punctuated by clerestory openings and a slotted skylight that runs the length of the kitchen. Organic timber ceilings, stairs and railings are framed by whitewashed surfaces, hand-trowelled plaster walls and running bond brickwork, creating a familiar, grounded base.
One level down, the plan transitions into a more introspective environment comprising bedrooms, a home office and bathrooms, with a dedicated guest and wellness suite occupying the lowest floor. Across the stepped arrangement, each level offers a unique outlook, moving between expansive views and a deeper immersion in the landscape. “Water views evoke an inherent sense of calm, and we wanted the interiors to quietly echo that mood,” Bidgood describes. “We focused on clarity over clutter – the palette and furnishings have room to breathe yet remain dynamic through rich tones and varied textures.”
Vibrant hues inspired by the natural surrounds are layered over a refreshing canvas – a deeper autumnal palette that injects warmth and depth. Rust-coloured upholstery and rugs become perfect counterparts to green velvet chairs, fabric wallpaper and flowing linen drapery. Russet cabinetry pairs well with warm timber and pale terrazzo floors, while bathrooms are animated by richly veined marble, quartzite and jade-green onyx, creating rooms that feel characterful, cosy and slightly unexpected. “Spaces feel both fresh and enveloping – light enough to breath and rich enough to feel lived in,” Bidgood adds.
Immersed in its seaside setting, Cliffside Residence is a characterful new build that brings craft and detail to a modernist silhouette. Guided by glistening waters and stunning views, the home offers a place of relaxation and retreat. The result is a cohesive sanctuary that extends effortlessly beyond its walls.
