Copake Lake House by Desai Chia Architecture
Designed by Desai Chia Architecture, Copake Lake House in Upstate New York is a bold reinterpretation of lakefront living, where modern architectural forms meet the natural contours of a secluded landscape.
The property is defined by a series of cantilevered volumes and strategically framed views that fully capture the serene beauty of Copake Lake and the mature oak trees along its shore. Nestled in the heart of Columbia County, New York, this area is known for its scenic landscapes and tranquil lakeside atmosphere, making it an idyllic retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. These oaks, unusually resilient to lakeside conditions, significantly influenced the home’s orientation, enhancing solar heat gain in winter and providing shade in summer.
The experience unfolds at the carport, marking a clear transition from urban chaos to lakeside serenity. The building’s foundation respects the deep-rooted oaks, minimising environmental impact while supporting an architecturally compelling facade made of concrete and Shou Sugi Ban-treated cypress. This specialised treatment not only enhances the wood’s durability but also increases its resistance to natural elements, its distinctive grey char defining its visual character.
Inside, the connection with the lake is omnipresent. The living room is lowered towards the lake, amplifying this connection and ensuring that views from the dining area remain unobstructed. Above, crisscrossing wooden beams, inspired by natural tree branches, play with light and shadow, enhancing the interior’s dynamic ambience throughout the day.
The design facilitates a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces. The kitchen acts as a crucial link between private and public zones, extending effortlessly to an outdoor terrace. The space is designed for year-round entertainment, complemented by a landscape that is both ecologically functional and harmoniously balanced. As the site is prone to flooding and erosion, stormwater management was a priority, with the inclusion of restored lakefront wetlands and rain gardens that support habitat for pollinators and the preservation of native plant species.
Details throughout the home demonstrate careful consideration, from windows strategically placed to maximise light and views to bespoke interior finishes that resonate with the external environment. A staircase leads to the private quarters upstairs, including a main suite that cantilevers four meters over the terrace, creating a covered outdoor area below.

Copake Lake House integrates gracefully with its lakeside environment. Each design element has been chosen to enhance the living experience while honouring and safeguarding the surrounding landscape. It serves as a serene refuge, embodying sustainable and thoughtful design principles.
