Pink House by And And And Studio
Working with the footprint and material palette of an existing WWI-era dwelling, architect And And And Studio has created a new, light-filled modern home that speaks to the casual flow of life in Los Angeles.
The home that originally stood in this spot in Los Angeles’ Atwater Village neighbourhood was built using prefabricated panels by female construction crews as part of a wartime effort. While the homeowners appreciated its understated aesthetic, the interior spaces were dark and damp and it lacked the necessary amenities for modern life, such as ample bathrooms and a central kitchen. Rather than renovate, And And And Studio created a new home within the boundaries of the existing one, using its essence as the basis for the design.
The exterior juxtaposes pink cement panels in varied densities and patterns with sections of traditional board and batten. These vertical lines carry through to the interiors, with grooved MDF wall panels creating a simple cottage aesthetic that is echoed throughout the house. Golden timber hues adorn the floors and joinery alongside simple white painted and timber cabinetry. Built-in furniture and storage drawers boost the functionality and versatility of the compact spaces, especially in the open-plan kitchen, dining and living area.
Despite the home’s small scale (120 square metres), the layout is open and airy, with a central double-height entrance foyer separating the private and living zones, negating the need for constricting hallways. The front door features a circular window, hinting at the playfulness of what lies beyond. Light is injected into the centre of the home through a skylight, and bedrooms feature pivoting doors that allow easy access to the outdoors.
The home embraces LA’s balmy climate, with the living room opening to a deck planted with tropical foliage and sheltered from the street by the pink-clad garage. The kitchen is simple and highly functional, with a marble countertop lending a swath of elegance and Art Deco-esque angled handles adorning the clean-lined white cabinets.
One bathroom features checkerboard tiled flooring and a gabled roofline to create a look reminiscent of a Wes Anderson-style pool changing-room, while the other is clad in pink tiled walls grounded by an ocean-green floor. These youthful gestures give the house a sense of lighthearted ease, which beautifully aligns with the quintessential breezy LA lifestyle.
