Dark and Stormy by Crystal Sinclair Designs

A century-old brownstone, Dark and Stormy has undergone a transformation to become a dramatic and immersive sanctuary. Inspired by a photograph of a city storm, Crystal Sinclair Designs uses dark hues, contrasting textures and metallic accents to create an atmosphere that enhances the home’s existing charm.

Originally built in 1901, Dark and Stormy embodies the classic New York City brownstone style, featuring lofted ceilings and generous proportions that converge along a hallway and grand staircase. Located near the Hudson River with a city-facing aspect, the original residence had gradually lost its allure due to a lack of upkeep. Recognising its potential as a family home, the owners embarked on a journey to transform it into their ideal living space. With Crystal Sinclair Designs, the aim was to restore the character of the house while ensuring functionality was seamlessly integrated throughout.

Inspired by a city storm photograph, the designer endeavoured to capture that atmospheric essence within the dwelling. The concept revolves around a journey through the home, mirroring the layers of the sky across its four floors, each imbued with its own character. Starting in the teal-painted basement, which resembles water, the journey progresses upward. The first floor features pink and gold tones in the kitchen, representing the space that sits beneath the clouds. Moving to the second floor, purples, blacks and greys symbolise storm clouds, while the top level showcases aqua and golden hues reminiscent of the sky above said clouds.

The moody finishes add a touch of drama, evoking both surprise and warmth. The rich palette and textures introduce a level of expression uncommon in residences of this nature. By combining materials such as wool, floor coverings, velvet, mohair, stained timber, natural stone, chrome and brass, the resulting home pays homage to the craftsmanship of the original dwelling. Infusing a contemporary flair into the design, customised 3D-printed plastics then create a connection to the present.
