Designed and built by Mr & Mrs Elias, this space balances contemporary living with gallery-like qualities. Positioned in the centre of Sydney’s prestigious harbour district, this penthouse apartment was originally constructed in the 1960s and had remained largely untouched for over 50 years. Its inspired reimagining has resulted in a luxurious yet understated space, designed to simultaneously support purposeful living, revere its exceptional harbour views and provide a gallery setting for a growing art collection.

“Every design decision was guided by restraint – nothing over-designed, everything purposeful. The result is a serene, enduring home that balances understated luxury with functional elegance.”

“Every design decision was guided by restraint – nothing over-designed, everything purposeful. The result is a serene, enduring home that balances understated luxury with functional elegance, allowing the ever-changing harbour views and the client’s future artworks to take centrestage,” says Jack Elias, project manager at Mr & Mrs Elias.

The designers undertook a full architectural renovation, approaching the project with an evaluative eye to transform what was originally a largely compartmentalised, disconnected layout into a spacious, contemporary apartment that showcases its stellar location. “The intention was not to erase the apartment’s past but to reinterpret it through a contemporary lens – one that prioritises clarity, longevity and a sense of luxury suited to the client’s next chapter.”

“Functionality is embedded within the architecture through generous bespoke joinery, ensuring everyday items can be concealed and the space maintains its calm presence.”

The client’s request to balance a functional living environment with a gallery-like space for their burgeoning art collection was essential to Mr & Mrs Elias’s approach. Materials including Taj Mahal stone, herringbone timber floors with stone and skirting, veneer joinery and clean walls played a significant role in creating an understated gallery effect.

It was equally important to ensure that the apartment functioned as a comfortable and practical space. “Functionality is embedded within the architecture through generous bespoke joinery, ensuring everyday items can be concealed and the space maintains its calm presence.” The transformation from an enclosed interior with limited natural light into a bright, expansive apartment has resulted in a welcoming home that reflects the client’s desire to settle into the space while highlighting the beauty of its surroundings.

“Downsizing for retirement doesn’t mean compromising – it can be an upgrade to architectural living with space, views and thoughtful design.”

The renovation was approached with a focus on meaningful and thoughtful intervention. Reworking the space involved selectively removing walls and reconfiguring the original plan to make the most of the structure’s existing fundamentals. “A key transformation involved merging the original study and lounge, turning what had once been a series of inward-looking rooms into a single, expansive living space oriented towards the harbour.” Mr & Mrs Elias note that the logistics of the renovation shaped the nature of the project, with its technical foundations established to serve both stability and aesthetics.

This apartment embodies the intersection of luxurious, understated design and functionality, offering its inhabitants the contemporary living space they envisioned for retirement. Darling Point Penthouse Apartment showcases Mr & Mrs Elias’s ability to craft a warm, elegant, multipurpose home that will serve as a haven for the client. “It’s a reminder that downsizing for retirement doesn’t mean compromising – it can be an upgrade to architectural living with space, views and thoughtful design.”
