EB House is a thoughtfully designed renovation that enhances a 1920s-30s Art Nouveau residence. Williams Burton Leopardi skilfully balances the home’s architectural integrity and history with the needs of a growing family, creating an expansion that both complements and refines the original structure.

“From the outset, our goal was to preserve the historical narrative of the house while introducing subtle yet meaningful contemporary enhancements,” says Sophia Leopardi, director of Williams Burton Leopardi. Rather than imposing a complete transformation, the design gently treads the line between preservation and progression. The front rooms and facade – hallmarks of the home’s Art Nouveau origins – have been reimagined through a modern lens, tying together the home’s past and present without compromising its authenticity.

“From the outset, our goal was to preserve the historical narrative of the house while introducing subtle yet meaningful contemporary enhancements,” says Sophia Leopardi.

The project faced two challenges: integrating a recent expansion while retaining the original geometric designs and ensuring a cohesive flow between spaces for both social gatherings and private retreats. The final layout strikes a balance, elevating everyday moments while maintaining a sense of restraint. The reconfigured interior prioritises flexibility, accommodating both intimate family moments and larger entertaining needs. By expanding the kitchen, living and dining areas, a spacious central hub was created, connecting to a new outdoor kitchen and living space. This outdoor extension revitalises a previously underused pool area, transforming it into a dynamic, functional space that activates the entire property. “Rather than extending the footprint, we focused on drawing life into existing spaces, ensuring that every part of the home felt intentional and connected,” says Leopardi.

The design emphasises the use of materials and textures to create richness and warmth throughout. A carefully chosen, muted palette contributes to a sense of calm in each area. Subtle details, like custom joinery, cool and warm finishes and larger openings help shape a new identity that captures the owners’ personalities. While grounded in the home’s history, the design fosters openness and flow, making it relevant to contemporary living. The thoughtful interplay between light and materials, especially with the larger apertures, connects different areas of the home and blurs traditional boundaries, enhancing the overall experience.

“Rather than extending the footprint, we focused on drawing life into existing spaces, ensuring that every part of the home felt intentional and connected,” says Leopardi.

EB House exemplifies restraint, with each design choice measured to maintain its charm and character while introducing a fresh sense of form and openness. Designed for both connection and solitude, the home features spaces that can adapt to the changing rhythms of family life. William Burton Leopardi’s approach enhances everyday moments while grounding the home in its historical context and era.
