A richly textured family home, Elwood House embodies 15 years of collaboration between Neil Architecture and the clients. Drawing on this history, the firm has created the ideal balance between connection and privacy within the renovated and expanded dwelling.

Set in its namesake suburb, Elwood House complements the leafy surroundings with extensive tonal brickwork. Its high front wall consists of Krause Emperor bricks in Ghost Grey which continue across the home’s facade. On the facade’s upper half, the bricks form a protective screen that softens the impact of harsh sunlight and shields the interiors from view. They also shape the pattern of light and shadow that is cast throughout the day, enriching the internal environment.

To increase the sense of privacy, the main entrance has been shifted to the side of the home and blended into the brickwork.

The front of the home is new, crafted to accommodate a carport, study, sitting room, ensuite and walk-in wardrobe. While the original architecture is thermally upgraded, the front portion achieves a six-star energy rating. In addition to spatial restructuring, the design brief called for a fully relandscaped garden. Surrounded by fresh greenery, the pool area is now accompanied by secure fencing, a new pool house, outdoor dining area and a fireplace, allowing for year-round entertaining.

To increase the sense of privacy, the main entrance has been shifted to the side of the home and blended into the brickwork. Once inside, residents are subtly guided by Eco Outdoor crazy paving which unites the spatial zones. Immediately to the left lies the parents’ retreat – a casual lounge area with built-in bar – while a compact study sits opposite, lined with tall timber bookshelves. To the right, the main hallway is illuminated by angled skylights.

American oak-lined ceilings infuse the rooms with warmth while full-height glazing sustains visual connection to the garden.

Throughout the new section, American oak-lined ceilings infuse the rooms with warmth while full-height glazing sustains visual connection to the garden. Much of the brickwork has been left exposed to develop textural character and contrast the softness of curtains, rugs and sofas. In addition, it highlights the luxury of the primary bedroom, where fabric wallpaper cocoons the bed. At the back of the house, the rethink utilises a structure completed only nine years ago. Containing the living, kitchen and dining areas, the space is thoughtfully refreshed with new countertops which serve as a foreground to the outdoor view.

Set back from the street, Elwood House engages with its suburb through a celebration of nature. By fostering this intimate experience of place, Neil Architecture ensures the home works seamlessly with the lifestyle of the clients and will support them for years to come.
