For Esca Inman Valley, Das Studio employs a design approach inspired by the rural context of South Australia by using elements and materials that reflect the natural surroundings to create an immersive experience for visitors.

Overlooking the picturesque Mount Alma, Esca Inman Valley lies to the south of Adelaide, situated inland from popular coastal areas. Its rustic exterior and warm, inviting interior beckons visitors to immerse themselves in the landscape, while extensive glazing maximises visibility of the surroundings. As part of a series, Esca Inman Valley has a light environmental footprint, operating entirely off-grid while allowing visitors to fully appreciate the Australian landscape. Challenging rustic offerings in remote settings, Das Studio leverages its expertise in prefabrication to integrate all comfort elements prior to onsite delivery, streamlining connections, access and controlling the impact of changing weather conditions.

The area exudes ruggedness, and carefully framed views allow guests to fully embrace the ever-changing weather during their stay. The aim was to foster deep immersion in the surroundings, achieved through two identical suites designed for separate occupancy, encouraging exploration of the landscape. Beginning with initial interactions with the site and progressing through an entry sequence flanked by boulders, visitors are gradually introduced to the unfolding landscape. The form contrasts with the challenging topography, aiming for an overall silhouette that feels recessive. This effect is highlighted by the use of dark tones and robust metal sheeting, reinforcing the intended vision.

The 66-square-metre suites maintain internal connections, with interior walls deliberately kept below full height to ensure views remain open while strategically integrating storage space. Despite the remote location, a fully equipped kitchen is included, complemented by a woodfire heater and open bathing areas that blend indoor and outdoor areas. Sustainability is also important, with features such as rainwater harvesting, a sealed, high-performing envelope and solar energy systems incorporated. Additionally, locally sourced furniture and custom-designed pieces underscore this commitment to sustainability.

With an overall dark and broody colour scheme, Esca Inman Valley is integrated with internal timber elements to introduce texture and foster a connection to the surroundings. Simplifying the architectural form, Das Studio ensures that the focus remains on the natural elements, crafting an ambience where the beauty of the environment takes precedence.
