The Shakers: A World in the Making

In the European summer, the Vitra Design Museum will host a major exhibition exploring the unique design culture of the Shakers, an 18th-century American religious community known for their commitment to equality, communal living and simplicity. The Shakers’ radically functional, minimalist approach profoundly influenced modern design, inspiring generations of designers, artists and architects. Curated by Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin of Formafantasma, the exhibition will feature original objects in their cultural context and contemporary artworks engaging with their legacy, demonstrating the enduring relevance of the Shakers’ pragmatic yet utopian vision in addressing today’s global challenges.
