‘Fables & Folklore’ by Simone Haag
Melbourne-based stylist, decorator and designer Simone Haag will make her curatorial debut with ‘Fables & Folklore’, Craft Victoria’s final main gallery exhibition of 2024.
Opening in November at Craft’s gallery in Melbourne, the exhibition brings together over 30 Australian artists to celebrate the power of storytelling through design, showcasing a diverse range of furniture, textiles, ceramics, beading and lighting. As a leading centre for contemporary craft and design, Craft supports Australian makers, artists and designers who blend reality and imagination in their work, a theme that is reflected in the exhibition.
Exploring the narratives within objects and artworks, Haag delves into storytelling and lore. “This collection highlights the enduring function of narratives in human culture – offering comfort, caution and insight – while emphasising craftsmanship, an essential aspect of Craft Victoria’s mission,” says Haag. “By honouring both the skill inherent in these creations and the rich tapestry of myths and tales, it reaffirms our collective desire to mould our surroundings and connect with our shared history.”
Haag showcases works by 36 Australian artists, featuring both established and emerging talents. This exhibition marks the first showing at Craft for many of the participating artisans. Some notable contributors include designer and artist Drew Abrahamson, timber and metal craftsman Nick Aylward and textile and sculpture artist Helen Fuller. Meanwhile, architect and multi-disciplinary designer Annie Paxton, lighting and product design studio Sozou Studio and ceramicist Jill Symes will be making their Craft debuts.
With many years of experience working in the interior and design industry, Haag makes her curatorial debut with ‘Fables & Folklore’, marking a professional shift. “Furniture, art and object is the sole focus of my studio, and I’ve had a longstanding relationship with Craft over that time,” says Haag. “Whilst I have long been a curator of homes, I have very much enjoyed my exhibition debut. The process has been more playful, less permanent. It has been collaborative with the artists and enjoyable for my intuition to guide the process, without the permanence of a residential home.” Nicole Durling, executive director at Craft Victoria adds, “as an instinctual curator, this exhibition shows Haag at her best.”
Haag’s sharp eye for design weaves a powerful and captivating narrative through her thoughtful curation of art and objects, providing a deep insight into the unique works of Australian artists. ‘Fables & Folklore’ opens at the Craft Victoria gallery on November 14, with an opening event from 6pm and 8pm on the same day.
