AP Design House and James Design Studio retain the heritage spirit of Federation House through a delicate blending of heritage preservation and contemporary liveability.

Approaching any project of such historical gravitas is not without its complexities. In what unfolded as a meticulous restoration that required an almost archaeological sensitivity to the original craftsmanship, every plaster detail of the seven-bedroom, seven-bathroom home was carefully considered and re-sculpted. The Mosman residence exudes calm and warmth through subtleties and soft textures. Originally designed within the Federation era, the house retains the memory of its original artisans and allows historical elements to sit in harmony with newer insertions.

A restrained palette has been used throughout to link the home’s eras. The renovation took place over five years and a number of challenges were overcome with an unwavering end goal to create a dwelling that would endure well beyond the present. Adopting a pared-back and classical approach, the brief was to create a home that would be the foundations for daily family life yet feel elevated and sophisticated. With the core floor plan preserved, an addition was conceived that felt like a natural extension of what existed prior.

The introduction of contemporary details was carefully approached. Wanting to both push boundaries from a design perspective and bring forward the original feel and charm was a core goal. While new, the diamond checkerboard flooring hints at a European presence and bygone era. All joinery, wall and ceiling details also follow suit, straddling a line between being responsive and inspired. Completing the story is the curation of furniture and lighting, which add personality while remaining subtle.
