Intrim Group’s portfolio features skirting boards, wall panelling, architraves and wainscoting, designed to complement both classic and contemporary aesthetics.

Most designers would agree that it’s the little things which make a home – the soft glow of a well-placed lamp, the texture of handwoven fabrics, the curve of a perfectly crafted chair. Decorative timber mouldings by Australian-owned company Intrim are designed to elevate these details, bringing warmth, personality and a sense of sophistication to any space.

Established in 1987 as a timber stairs manufacturer, Intrim has since emerged as a pacesetter in the world of bespoke timber mouldings, collaborating with architects, interior designers and builders to provide perfectly matched moulding. Over the years, Intrim’s identity has evolved to encompass a range of finely crafted timber mouldings. The company’s portfolio includes an assortment of skirting boards, intricate wall panelling, ornate architraves and elegant wainscoting that can be tailored to work with both classic and contemporary aesthetics.

As Harvey Quinsey, the company’s director and head of business development and partnerships, explains, mouldings are more than mere accoutrements. “They are fundamental to defining a space,” he says. This explains why Intrim’s portfolio holds a mirror to a variety of design languages, from the soft contours of Mediterranean style to the imperial detailing of Baroque or Renaissance-influenced architecture. “Every product is crafted with attention to proportion, scale and materiality to enhance both functionality and beauty,” Quinsey adds.

Danielle Bonello-Dunsford of Danielle Victoria Design Studio agrees that timber mouldings are an excellent way to introduce depth, dimension and architectural character to a space, effortlessly enhancing its overall aesthetic and charm. A recent project by her studio, Roseville House in the Sydney suburb of the same name, is a compelling case in point. Once a tired, California-style bungalow, Bonello-Dunsford brought it back to life by augmenting the floor plan, elevating the ceilings and softening spaces with tactile finishes. Additionally, she reconfigured the layout to create a more fluid design with an abundance of natural light.

The designer introduced characterful joinery from Intrim to achieve the glamorous, Hamptons-inspired aesthetic envisaged by the owners. Distinctive skirting boards and architraves were applied to the walls and kitchen island as a nod to Hamptons-style wainscoting, while the arched doorways of the study and laundry were softened with curved architraves to evoke an effortless vintage appeal. Chair rails and inlay moulding were used in the entryway, living spaces and bedrooms to bring a sense of sophistication. As for the transitions between the architraves and skirting, Bonello-Dunsford employed traditional skirting blocks to create deliberate pauses, lending a sense of thoughtful craftsmanship to the overall scheme.

Beyond aesthetics, timber mouldings can contribute to the durability and longevity of interiors. Skirting boards, for instance, serve to protect walls from scuffs and everyday wear, while wainscoting can add an extra layer of insulation and resistance to moisture in key areas such as hallways and dining rooms. When chosen carefully, these elements not only enhance the visual appeal of a home but add to its practicality.

With its focus on precision and design, Intrim’s range of timber mouldings can enhance both heritage and contemporary spaces. As interest in decorative mouldings continues to grow, mouldings remain a versatile feature in interior design, valued for both their form and function.
