Focusing on human-centred design, SARAH ELLISON. presents the exclusive sofa FLOAT. Inspired by the conversational pit lounges from 1970s-era homes, the design is unveiled alongside a new signature brown hue – SARAH ELLISON. Piccolo – crafted in collaboration with Pantone Color Institute™.

SARAH ELLISON. generates a calming discourse through her reimagined sofa FLOAT. Paired alongside the warming brown hue of SARAH ELLISON. Piccolo, the human-centric furniture piece is designed to spark conversation. The rich and bold brown colourway of Piccolo marks the very first collaboration between an Australian designer and the global Pantone powerhouse.

A reimagining of conversational pits in 1970s-era homes, FLOAT evokes a desire to sit back and connect with surroundings.

“After years of global disorder and disruption, I was inspired to design this piece as a means of encouraging conversation,” Sarah explains. The modular sofa works to reignite the passion of gathering through its shape “and the colours we selected were going to play a key component to help communicate this idea.” A reimagining of conversational pits in 1970s-era homes, FLOAT evokes a desire to sit back and connect with surroundings. “We are seeing more people embracing the style of furniture that enables an ease of storytelling. The trend is being driven by proximity with a sectional sofa facilitating conversation,” she adds. “The embrace of a bulbous, low-slung, textural centrepiece […] offers a level of comfort and simplifies the human connection that has been lacking in recent years.”

In discovering Piccolo, SARAH ELLISON. and the Pantone team engaged in many conversations “to find a tone that signified in colour the essence of human connection,” Sarah notes. “Together, we felt the need to embrace a colour that encouraged rejuvenation after a period of particular darkness and upheaval, and this shade of brown had a powerful unifying and grounding effect.” Sarah’s vision for connection is emphasised by Pantone’s extensive knowledge. “This collaboration heralds a new moment in design for the home space,” explains Laurie Pressman, Vice President of Pantone Color Institute™. In line with the SARAH ELLISON. aesthetic, FLOAT is the first product to showcase the new brown hue. “As a colour that represents the earth, brown nourishes the soul in many ways and is the catalyst for life,” Laurie adds.
