Folk House is a renovation project that reimagines an existing home to capture the site’s remoteness while preserving its robust character. CJH Studio and Paul Robertson Architect create a calm retreat in Byron Bay, drawing inspiration from the tones of the Hinterland forest to provide the owners with an ideal escape.

Folk House has been designed as a dark and textural space that creates a sense of being transported to another place once you step inside. Initially, the plan was to build an entirely new dwelling, but after evaluating the existing structure, the focus shifted to transforming and expanding it instead. The design emphasises a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor areas, ensuring that the surroundings have a strong presence and are integrated into the overall experience of the home from the first interaction.

By employing a rich material palette, CJH Studio and Paul Robertson Architect establish a deeper connection between the home and nature.

Due to the need to comply with local bushfire regulations and the challenges of cost, time and complexity, building an entirely new residence was not feasible. Instead, the decision was made to renovate the existing structure, and this approach provided a solid framework for the project. As part of the transformation, a rundown garage was converted into an independent guest suite, which now has its own unique character on site. This allows visitors to enjoy the property while having their own private space. The design maintains a consistent palette and proportion between the main home and the guest structure. Drawing inspiration from the surrounding forested area, the design moves away from the typical coastal style of Byron Bay, which creates a new response that reflects the unique context of the area.

By employing a rich material palette, CJH Studio and Paul Robertson Architect establish a deeper connection between the home and nature. Despite being somewhat limited by the existing form, the attention to detail in both the main residence and the dilapidated outbuildings creates a cohesive vision for the entire site. This unification strengthens the owners’ goal of achieving a simple yet harmonious abode. The use of natural materials and a consistent warmth throughout the design evokes a calming, retreat-like atmosphere. Each element is chosen to engage the senses, and the resulting home is a carefully curated space that embodies intention and restraint.

Folk House redefines coastal architecture by embracing a raw, textural approach. The design’s subtle details allow sunlight to cast shadows on various surfaces. The spaces envisioned by CJH Studio and Paul Robertson Architect serve as a canvas, capturing the changing light and the passage of time throughout the home.
